News and events for the week ending 27th July 2018 Friday 27th July 2018 Opening words from the Executive Principal如需阅读校长的中文留言和重要事件日期,请点击此处 Kia ora tatou, good afternoon, 你好 Welcome back to school! I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday and has either enjoyed the sun in a land far far away, or has at least found the time to relax with family at home as the wind rattles the windows and the rain falls. Term Three has begun at a gallop, as it always does, and I can sense the urgency in our older students as they head towards their exams: this is the last term of school for our Years 11, 12 and 13, so please expect some hard work from them! It was lovely to welcome nearly thirty new students to our school on Tuesday. Most of the students’ parents were able to attend our powhiri as well, serenaded by the beautiful voices of our Primary School, and by the not-quite-so-beautiful tones of our senior staff. If you are new to the school this week: a huge welcome to you as you join our community. Please make sure you ask any and every question you can possibly think of as you settle into our school. This includes, of course, our new teachers: Ms Lewandowski has made an immediate impression in our “new” New Entrants’ class; Mrs Cataloni has done similarly with her Year 6 class; and Mrs Benson is doing a wonderful job with her New Entrants’ class alongside Mrs Aston (Ms Speir takes over this class in Term 4). A warm welcome back, too, to Mrs Old, teaching Year 7 and 8 Science and Mrs Morfett and Mrs Easson, teaching Year 7-13 English. Our school now has over 900 students, and we will grow a little further as the year progresses. Next year, we expect to have waiting lists in nearly every year from Years 1 to 8, and to have slightly larger groups in Years 9 to 13 as well. We are happy with these numbers, as they allow us to do more with our curriculum and co-curricular opportunities, but I do want to reassure everyone that we are not intending to increase significantly in size. In Year 1 to 8, we are pretty much at capacity, and we will just have some measured growth in Years 9 to 13. I was lucky enough to spend two weeks with students from Years 7 to 9 over the holiday. Accompanied by Mr Ryoo and Ms Anderson, we visited Shanghai, Hangzhou and Suzhou in China, and spent a week or so in the company of Imae Middle School just south of Seoul, Korea. This was our first exchange trip with this school, and it was a wonderful experience. Our children were looked after brilliantly, and were superb ambassadors for Pinehurst. It was a great trip, and I loved getting to know our children a little better. We look forward to welcoming the Imae students back to our school next year. Thank you to Mr Ryoo and Ms Anderson for making this possible. I am delighted to welcome back Ms Pirini, Mr Konlechner and the intrepid students and parents who spent two weeks high up in the clouds on the mountains and hills of Peru and Bolivia. A few moments of altitude sickness aside, it was also a fantastic trip that our young people will remember for the rest of their lives. Thank you so much to Ms Pirini and Mr Konlechner. We also had four students in South Africa! (It’s been a very busy few weeks!). Our Year 11 students spent a few fantastic weeks at Beaulieu College on the outskirts of Johannesburg, and have come back glowing. They’ve also come back with their four exchange students from Beaulieu, who will be with us for the next six weeks. A warm welcome to our guests. A final piece of news: we have a new tuck shop in operation, run by DeeJays, who run the catering of a number of schools around Auckland. Ezlunch continues to run as it has always run, but students in Years 7 to 13 now have access to a different menu in the tuck shop. We’ve continued to restrict food choices and are sustaining our commitment to balanced, healthy eating, and there are a few new choices as well. Good luck to everyone playing sport for the school this week and over the weekend. We also have some intense practising going on for the KBB Music Festival this weekend, and I’m enjoying seeing the junior primary production starting to crank into action. I’m really looking forward to seeing our littlest students in action. Have a lovely weekend. Ngā mihi Alex Reed Alex Reed WEEK 2: Monday 30th July

On Saturday, the 8th of September, these six Senior College students will learn how to support their mates, gain skills to look after themselves and when times get tough, be leaders of positive change in their school and in their local communities. Rescue Run is not your typical 'Mud Run' - it is so much more. On a scale never-before-seen in New Zealand (or the world!) ... these obstacles are extreme. We're talking a 60-metre-long earthquake zone made out of concrete and lined with challenges ... Mudslides that are bigger than you can imagine! This will be an experience to rival all other adventure races. Competitors are timed across a 15km high intensity obstacle course with points awarded for a variety of team challenges. Obstacle disaster zones are insane; designed by disaster relief and emergency service professionals including Civil Defence, Land Search and Rescue Auckland, St John, Surf Life Saving Northern Region, CoastGuard Northern Region, Northland Emergency Services Trust, and more... they will each simulate real-world rescue scenarios. In order to help our Pinehurst School students take part, PLEASE MAKE A DONATION HERE so that the students can reach their $5,000 target. All the money raised from this will go to one of the four Senior College charities – Youthline. Youthline/Bakers Delight FundraiserOn Friday, the 29th of June, Zaria Hankins, who is one of this year’s 24 finalists in Miss Auckland 2018, came into Pinehurst School to fundraise for her chosen charity (Youthline). With the help of a few Matai students, Zaria sold a large number of sticky buns. Thank you to everyone who supported Zaria’s initiative. China and Korea Cultural TourIn the holidays a group of 24 students, 3 teachers and 3 parents visited China and Korea. In China they visited 3 cities; Shanghai, Hangzhou and Suzhou. The highlight of Hangzhou was watching the Romance of the Song Dynasty which was set in a replica town of the Song period. There was an enjoyable boat ride across the West Lake, even with it being 38 degrees outside. In Suzhou the group visited a Buddhist temple and the students were able to explore the different buildings and understand more of the culture and tradition. In Korea they drove up to Seorak Mountain where some of the students (and adults) overcame their fears of heights and traveled up the cable car to the top of one of the ridges. Here they were able to see all the way down the mountain and the students had a great time taking pictures and exploring around the top of the ridge. The group then traveled on to Seoul and to our sister school – Imae. This was by far the highlight of their trip. The welcome they received from Imae was spectacular. They exchanged cultural performances in a welcome assembly and our students did us proud by performing a Haka, Poi dance and Waiata. The students all met their home-stay students and friendships were quickly formed. Imae School opened their eyes to the culture and way of life in Korea through a special 2 day timetable that was taught by both Imae teachers and students. The most memorable classes were the Korean calligraphy class where students learnt how to write their names. The K-Pop dance class where a group of older students taught our students a K-pop dance routine and the etiquette and rice cake making class where our students were able to experience some of the best parts of Korean culture. The experiences had by all were unforgettable and the friendships formed will last a lifetime. We are very much looking forward to hosting Imae School when they come to visit us next year to show them the unique way of life we have in Aotearoa. Special thanks to the three parents; Melissa, Suzanne and Graeme who helped make this trip such a success, and to Patrick and Rachel for the organisation both before and throughout the trip. Music on a RollCongratulations to Polly Xing Yr 9 (photo below) who entered the competition in the SAPACS (South Auckland Performing Arts Competitions Society), 54th Annual Festival and won the Senior General Instrumental Championship Hutchison Family Cup by playing the flute. Congratulations also to Shuan Liu Yr 11 (photo below) who entered the 2018 Wallace National Junior Piano Competition (WNJPC), now in its third year. The WNJPC is a nationwide classical piano competition for New Zealand's best pre-tertiary pianists, competing for a total prize pool of $4,000 at the University of Auckland's School of Music. Only 16 young pianists were chosen across the country to compete in the finals and Shuan received Second Place. She also received a prize for the Best Performance of a New Zealand Work. She thoroughly enjoyed the event and was commended for her beautiful sound, good understanding of the music, and her individual style as well. We are delighted to welcome Catherine Carr (photo below), as our new vocal tutor and College Choir Director who will be working with Year 7-13 every Friday lunchtime in C2. Catherine is a well-known and highly respected Music Director in the Auckland Theatre scene and also offers vocal itinerant lessons at the school. PLEASE NOTE DEADLINE: SUNDAY 19 AUGUST Last chance to buy Entertainment Book!Kia Ora, Welcome to Term 3, we have had a very settled start in Week 1 and everyone seems rested and happy to be back. We welcomed 20 new Primary families and students and two teachers with a powhiri on Tuesday morning and it was wonderful to see how enthusiastic our existing students were in their singing. It is a really important aspect of what we do to mark special occasions with cultural celebrations and is all part of making memories. This term we will have the pleasure of watching our Junior Primary students perform Seussical. In the Primary we give our students the opportunity to take part in shows so that they get theatre experience and learn valuable skills of performance, acting, singing and dancing. Everyone gets a part and a costume and although not everyone can be the lead this time it will no doubt inspire many of our students to want to participate fully in the future. This week our lead cast have been learning their lines and songs and we look forward to working with each junior class from next week as they rehearse their class items. The performances will be held in Pinehurst Arena on the 11th and 13th of September. We will be letting you know how we are progressing each week and communicating all necessary information about costumes and show times as appropriate. If past experience is anything to go by it will certainly be a memorable performance! Ngā mihi, Sian Coxon, Principal of Primary Basketball – Year 1 & 2We have 2 places available for Year 1 or 2 students who may wish to play Basketball in a Pinehurst team in Term 3. Games are played on a Monday afternoon / evening. For further information, or to register, please contact basketball@pinehurst.school.nz Flippaball Gold!Gold winners!!! On 1 July 2018 our Year 5/6 Flippaball team won the B Grade Gold Plate for Term 3. The coach, manager and parents are so very proud of the team, they have come such a long way! Go Finn, Hybo, Jacob, Hunter, Alistair, Eleanor, Isabelle and Tara! Maths Whizz students16 students from P13 received certificates from Maths Whizz for averaging 3 or more progressions for Term 2. Congratulations and well done to these students! P1 Recharged and Raring to Go!P1 students are excited and motivated to continue learning lots of new things. We have a fun filled term ahead of us which I am sure you will be hearing lots about from everyone. Some of us were sporting the new school sport’s tracksuits which kept us lovely and warm on a crisp winter’s morning.
We were fortunate enough on Wednesday to receive a hockey coaching session with Has from North Harbour Hockey. We all had great fun learning how to hold the hockey stick and dribble the ball SAFELY!! We could see some budding future Black Sticks in the making! (and the sun was shining down on us!). In Science this term we are learning all about varied materials and whether they can be recycled or not. We went on a hunt around the school to find as many recycling bins and boxes as we could. We found lots! We sorted through our classroom rubbish and turned ourselves into human recycling. Spot the cardboard, paper and plastic ‘recycling trees’! We had such a wonderful time and have learned so much already about recycling. Primary MusicTerm 3 has started with a hiss and a roar in the music room, particularly for our junior students who are off to a great start with “Seussical” rehearsals. Songs are being learnt, staging, and choreography has started, and our teachers are all very busy sorting out props and costumes. What an exciting, busy term it’s going to be! Thank you to all our junior primary parents for their support at home helping main characters learn their scripts. We are very much looking forward to highlighting the talents of our youngest children in Week 8. I have enjoyed hearing all the holiday stories from students coming back to my room this week and hearing about some of the musical experiences they have had too. Whether it was hearing interesting music in other countries or experiencing music in shows or movies they attended. “Mamma Mia!” was definitely a highlight for some of us. We continue with our ukuleles and recorders this term and I am delighted at the progress our students have made in learning these instruments so far. Look out for some of our talented performers on Seesaw. P10P10 had a lovely break and we all got to do some fun activities and have a rest and recharge our batteries. On Monday, we welcomed two new students to our class and the Pinehurst family, Sam Jiang and Jenny Ren. We had a pōwhiri in the arena to officially welcome all the new students and families to the Pinehurst Community. A pōwhiri is held where the Tangata Whenua (Hosts) wish to formally welcome a group of Manuhiri (visitors). After Mr Reed introduced himself and greeted our new families we sung Tena Koutou. A waiata (song) is sung after each speech. Victoria Smith, a new member of our Pinehurst family responded with a speech on behalf of all the Manuhiri, and Te Aroha was sung. Victoria’s daughter Emily has begun her learning journey with her very first day of school on Monday. Lighthouse LandscapesIn P15 Art we have been creating lighthouse landscapes using water colours. First, we learnt how to sketch a lighthouse landscape freehand, this was difficult for some students as they were tempted to sneakily use a ruler. We practised sketching a variety of different lighthouses, once we were confident at sketching a lighthouse freehand we sketched our good copy using a sharpie. Next, we added colour using water coloured pencils. We were only allowed to use the primary colours – red, yellow and blue. We blended the primary colours to create different shades. We then used a fine paint brush to add water and mix our shading, we were amazed at how the primary colours combined to create new colours such as brown, green and purple. Year 5 and 6 NetballDuring the holidays two teams of girls from Year 5 and 6 competed in a Mid- Season Netball North Harbour Junior Competition. Each team played about 5 games and our Year 6 team made it to the final of their pool. In a very close final, in which they were down 6-1 at half time, they fought their way back to an 8-7 victory. Thanks to Junior College umpires: Paige Bell and Charlotte Clark, and the parents who coached, managed and supported the girls. Year 5 Team:

Thank you Pinehurst families for your support. Kia Ora, Welcome back to the start of a new term. During the three week break 3 groups of students have been travelling the world. Twenty four students from Years 7, 8 and 9 visited China and Korea. A group of senior students traveled to Peru and four students returned from their South African exchange. Next week we will be hosting parent teacher conferences for all college students. Bookings can be made online through Parent Portal, please be aware that we will close the booking site on Monday afternoon in order to enable teachers to prepare for their meetings. Every year we do have parents who attend conferences despite not having made any bookings. Though teachers will do what they can to accommodate everyone this does create difficulties and an inconvenience for parents who have booked times. This year we have changed the venue for all Junior and Senior College parent teacher conferences. They will take place in College 4, our new teaching block at the northern end of our site next to the hockey turf. I am often asked if students should attend these meetings. We leave this decision to parents, though I find the conferences far more useful when discussions take place with the student present. This is the time of year when we begin planning of our courses and timetable for 2019. On Monday 13th August we will host our IGCSE options evening. This evening is aimed at current Year 9 students who will be planning their Year 10 and 11 academic programmes. On Monday 20th we will host our A Level options evening, this involves Year 11 and 12 students. During the rest of the term students will have the opportunity to discuss subject choices with teachers and Mrs Griffiths our careers counsellor, prior to making their final decisions by 16th October. During these evenings we will present the option choices and provide detailed information about Cambridge IGCSE and Advanced Level education systems. This year the Ministry of Education has selected Pinehurst to represent New Zealand in the worldwide PISA survey. This will involve 24 randomly selected Year 11 students. PISA is run by OECD and is the world’s largest international education study involving over half a million students from eighty different countries. Students will be notified next week if they have been selected. Ngā mihi, Chris Wiggin and Kieran Verryt Principals of College The Junior College Formal ConcertThe concert will be held on the 15th of August in the Arena from 4.30pm and parents and students are warmly invited for an hour long concert showcasing the many musical talents of the Year 7s and 8s. Students that wish to perform in the concert will need to audition in C2 on Wednesday the 1st of August at lunchtime. If you need to arrange an alternative time to audition please email marija.naumovska@pinehurst.school.nz Staff Defeat the StudentsOn the last day of Term 2 the staff took on the College students in an annual 'grudge' football match. This eagerly anticipated fixture had been cancelled twice due to heavy rain. However the rain couldn't affect the astro-turf or the final result. Goals from Mr Elliot and Mr Jaques ensured a 2-1 victory over the disappointed students. The staff take back the 'Tasker Cup' and more importantly, 'bragging rights'(!) The Sports Council will be looking to organise more staff vs. student fixtures in Term 3 so keep a look out in the news on Schoolbox. Years 12 & 13 Speech CompetitionAt the end of last term, nine of our Year 12 and 13 students participated in the senior speech competition. These students had all progressed from their class competitions. The students spoke superbly well and covered an eclectic range of topics from ‘organ donation’ to a particularly witty piece on ‘why the earth is flat’. Understandably, the judges took some time to reach a decision. In the end, Jemma Goeldner once again took out the first spot with her speech on the treatment of gays. In second place was Maria Kopilevich who spoke about the ills of social media and Subin Wui came third with her speech on stereotypes. Congratulations to all those who participated; it is inspiring to see our senior students leave Pinehurst as such confident and accomplished speakers. South African Exchange StudentsIt is with great pleasure that we invite four South African exchange students from Beaulieu College in Johannesburg to Pinehurst College. They will be joining our Year 11 group from 23 July to 31 August and will be hosted by their New Zealand buddy exchange students, who had the opportunity of being hosted by them in June in South Africa. They are Adrian Conradie, Ashti Hari, Luzandi Landman and Julia Schurr. We wish them all the best with their wonderful Kiwi experience. Year 10 DramaOn Thursday evening the Year 10 Drama class performed their Modern Drama monologues. These were from plays such as Hedda Gabler, Woyzeck, Miss Julie and Heartbreak House. The students performed very well to an audience of their friends and family. They will be devising their own performances next as well as beginning to prepare for the examination which is in May next year. Congratulations to all of the students and thank you to all those who came along. Student Council FundraiserAt lunchtime on Friday, the 15th of June, and Friday, the 29th of June, the Student Council organised two sausage sizzles in order to fundraise for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of New Zealand. There was baking as well. As a result of the students’ efforts, $374 will be donated to the Prostate Cancer Foundation. A huge thank you to all of the students who supported this event and special thanks to the following Student Council members – James Corles, Jordan Botha, Oscar Botha, Nikkita Murray, Ella Toumadj and Nathan Donnell for kindly giving up their time to support this event. Senior Hockey ReportTakapuna Grammar sent a fine squad of eager players along to Kristin School for a gentle game of hockey with the Pinehurst 1st XI. The game started well and both teams were making a sustained effort to create openings and probe for weaknesses in the defence. Soon Pinehurst turned up the pressure and a couple of quick goals set them on their way. The opposition were rumbled and now on the back foot. With a buoyed confidence the Pinehurst team stepped up the tempo and soon a couple more goals were notched up. The Pinehurst chaps played a confident and relaxed style of hockey and a good nature was developed with both teams even though the score was definitely one-way. Pinehurst were after a four-goal victory, so as to gain another point in the league table and by half-time they were on track. The sun had set and the grey monotone evening had spread its wings around the golden glow of the field, as the players embarked upon the second half. After the break the score continued to climb. There were plenty of goals and Hamish was particularly ecstatic with his moment of glory. With two minutes left Takapuna tore through the Pinehurst team and were looking up for a last-minute fight, but as deserved as it would have been, the goal was saved and Pinehurst resumed ‘normal service’. Goals were scored by Hamish (1), Nathan (1), Ollie (2), Hayden (3), Mitch (5), and there was a lucky deflection which was another. Takapuna Grammar did well to keep their chins up and must be congratulated for their stoic efforts. U15 Basketball National TournamentCongratulations to Year 9 students J’aimee Hawkings and Charlie Molloy, who competed in the 2018 U15 National Basketball tournament over the holiday break. Charlie was part of the Hibiscus Coast U15 Boys A team, and J’aimee the North Harbour Girls B team. Congratulations to Danielle WheelerDannielle recently made the U15A Harbour Hockey Representative team. Visit to the Auckland University Engineering Departments Girls Only DayRiding a Segway, building bridges & robotics were just a few of the activities Year 11 students Sofia Cradwick and Danielle Yong got to participate in at the recent 'Enginuity Day', held at the Engineering Department of Auckland University. This is a once a year opportunity for high school girls to explore the possibility of a career as an engineer, and to experience 'life on campus' as a university student. Both girls enjoyed learning about the different types of engineering, had fun problem solving and working alongside other students from around New Zealand, and would definitely recommend the day to any other girls with an interest in Maths and Physics. A big thanks to Careers Counsellor Kaye Griffiths for helping them to organise this opportunity. Duke of Edinburgh Gold Awards 2018Three former pupils received their Gold Awards at an official ceremony at Kristen Auditorium on Saturday 20th July. Nico van Wijk, Yagmur Hounsome and Megan Thomas all received their awards. All of them have completed all 3 awards – Bronze, Silver and Gold and have committed a huge amount of time towards finally achieving their Gold Award. In order to complete the coveted, ‘Gold’ they participated 12 months of their time towards learning a new skill, volunteering their time and participating in a regular form of sport or physical activity. On top of this they will have completed a practice tramp and a final qualifying tramp of a minimum of 60km over 5 days and 4 nights. All 3 should be commended on a fantastic achievement. Well done.
