BREAKFAST SALES REAWAKENINGBreakfast sales are on the upswing and foodservice operators have been enhancing their breakfast offerings with comforting favourites, indulgent innovations and dishes that transcend the norm. According to the NPD Group, breakfast sandwiches are the most ordered food items, included in 30% of morning orders, followed by breakfast burritos/wraps. To bring customers back following the pandemic, chains such as Taco Bell and Wendy’s are focusing on promoting the morning day part with new menu items and extended times. 2. TACO BELL'S CRISPY CHICKEN TACOTaco Bell is testing a new Crispy Chicken Sandwich Taco in select U.S. locations starting on March 11th. This is part of the chain’s strategy to tap into the growing chicken category with more crispy chicken innovations on their way. Taco Bell’s new offering features all-white crispy chicken marinated in jalapeño buttermilk, seasoned with Mexican spices, rolled in a crunchy tortilla chip coating and topped with its signature creamy chipotle sauce. 3. ITSU'S FROZEN ASIAN CUISINE RANGE2021 is shaping up to be a big year for Asian cuisine. Itsu, the healthy Asian foodservice chain, is making its TV debut with a multi-national campaign designed to support its frozen range, sales of which climbed 59% in 2020. The campaign is expected to reach 16 million households and feature UK celebrity stylist and chef, Gok Wan. The campaign features Gok cooking simple Asian-fusion meals in his kitchen using Itsu products. 4. FLEXIBLE COMMUNITY FOODHALLSP-THREE, a real estate consultancy specialising in retail, restaurants and leisure, has released its Foodhalls Report for 2021. The foodhall market is predicted to grow significantly across the UK and Europe as restrictions lift with a continued focus on food but also as social spaces. This next generation of spaces are coined F-Hubs, where the F stands for food and flexible use. Successful community F-hubs are expected to be in spaces which are local, relevant, convenient and connected with the flexibility to cater towards the arts, cinema, retail, cultural, flex workspace or educational spaces. 5. PAPA JOHN'S NEW FLATBREADPapa John’s unveiled its new Papadia range in 23 markets around the world. The new Italian flatbread, inspired by the piadina of Northern Italy, is part pizza and part sandwich. Different locations will choose which recipes to launch, however all markets will offer the Philly Cheesesteak, BBQ Chicken and Italian Sausage and Pepperoni. In addition to the new range, Papa John’s is placing more attention on technology to enhance their deliveries. Towards the end of last year, it joined many other brands in implementing artificial intelligence-powered voice assistants to tackle phone orders. 6. HOT & SPICY FIRE WOK POTSSelect retailers in the U.S. are now offering Nissin’s new Hot & Spicy Fire Wok range. The ready-to-go stir fry noodle pots come in three flavours: Molten Chili Chicken, Sizzlin’ Rich Pork and Scorchin’ Sesame Shrimp. The chicken option brings the most heat while the pork is a slightly milder option. Typically, instant ramen or stir fry bowls require an extra douse of hot sauce so Nissin has taken this step out for consumers to simply heat and enjoy. 7. STARBUCK'S SPRING SANDWICHESStarbucks have added new limited-edition sandwiches to freshen up their menu for Spring. The new offerings include a Chicken, Mozzarella & Pesto Focaccia that features chicken breast, green nut-free pesto, creamy mozzarella and semi-dried tomatoes in a rosemary-topped focaccia. The other two launches are plant-based with a Spinach & Pea Falafel Wrap that includes a punchy, pickled cabbage slaw and a caramelised onion hummus and a Veggie New York Style Deli Sandwich filled with a tangy and crunchy slaw, mild Emmental, peppery rocket and mustard mayo. 8. QSR'S TURN TO FOOD TRUCK MODELFood trucks are back in the spotlight thanks to the prolonged pandemic. These mobile kitchens fit today’s foodservice needs and many QSR brands are now considering food trucks as their next strategic move. YUM Brands is one example with Pizza Hut Indonesia having launched its first food truck at the end of 2020 and KFC Thailand currently testing the mobile format too. Food trucks offer greater flexibility for large brands to get closer to their customers, with the ability to move into new neighbourhoods. 9. NEW ON THE SCENE: WING DADDIESBone Daddies, a growing Japanese ramen chain in the UK, is expanding through a sister brand called Wing Daddies, opening on March 1st. The diverse menu will focus on indulgent favourites such as chicken wings, loaded tater tots, fried chicken and bao buns.
