Welcome!

Dear Readers,

To better be able to serve you during the summer, we are switching to sending out these newsletters bi-weekly during the summer months. This is the last edition that will be sent out weekly. We will still be bringing you relevant information, but will do so a little less frequently. You can still schedule meetings with us.

Stay Connected!

We have set up 2 new Canvas modules for current students and alumni to be able to stay connected with one another during the application process, and to allow you to watch our pre-recorded group advising sessions.

Join our Health Professions School Applicants Networking Space to ask & answer questions about any part of the application process. We want this to be  a safe place for our Penn State applicants to have open and honest discussions about their candidacy. We will begin using this platform to send out important application and exam announcements.

Join our PreHealth Group Advising module to learn about preparing for a career in your chosen health profession, and gain access to the pre-health advising team.

What the Health? is an online book club focused on learning about and discussing health equity. The book club meets on the last Wednesday of every month. More information here.

Financial Literacy Trivia

Do you like trivia?  Are you financially savvy? Come have fun and play financial literacy trivia, hosted by the staff of Penn State’s Sokolov-Miller Family Financial & Life Skills Center via Zoom & Kahoot.

Trivia questions and discussion will focus on budgeting for your passions, as well as managing credit cards and your credit score.  Please join us!  To play, you'll need a screen (like a computer or iPad) and your cell phone handy.

Prioritizing Equity Series

In the latest installment of our YouTube Prioritizing Equity series, join practicing physicians and leaders in health care as they share how they are addressing root causes of inequity during COVID-19 and beyond – by centering equity in their workspaces and dismantling racist policies and practices.

Potential Opportunities as COVID-19 Contact Tracers

With the pandemic precluding RAs from serving shifts in the EDs, NARAP has pivoted for the moment to offer the COVID-19 Potential Contact Tracer Registry (www.thenarap.org/covid-19-tracers-application-regist )  as a clearinghouse for public agencies looking for COVID 19 Contact Tracers among pre-health professions students.

Contact Tracers represent among the best currently available public health interventions to halt the spread of coronavirus infections.

Tracing

  • involves in-depth telephone calls to Cases, those determined to be infected
  • follow-up calls to their Contacts at risk for becoming infected
  • encouraging isolation for Cases and quarantine for Contacts,
  • insuring the availability of resources to accomplish these crucial measures
  • assessing for symptoms of deterioration.

Contact Tracers will develop patient interaction skills readily transferable to the traditional clinical arena as well as to Telemedicine, a sure part of future healthcare. Find out more!
