Unitec’s outstanding PBRF results

I am delighted to share the outstanding performance of Unitec in the 2018 PBRF (Performance Based Research Fund) Quality Evaluation, following the release of initial results this week.

It is a highly competitive, nationally peer reviewed process, run by the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC).

Unitec was hugely successful with 124 of 128 portfolios submitted achieving a fundable rating. The portfolios outline the audited research outputs of each eligible academic, along with their contributions to the research environment, such as winning research funding or transferring knowledge into our communities.

Unitec was the top ranked of 14 ITPs participating in the PBRF Quality Evaluation and we will receive more than a quarter of the total ITP sector funding. This also put us in ninth position of all 36 tertiary education organisations participating, and we will be the only ITP to receive more than 1% of the national funding resource.

It is important to acknowledge that the research activity which led to this result has occurred under difficult circumstances and I want to congratulate and thank the researchers involved. Our staff are evaluated alongside university academics who work in environments more conducive to research and they are evaluated in a process which is designed around the priorities of the university sector so it really is a significant result.

This is the breakdown of extraordinary achievements in this context:

Grade                     2018 results

A                                             5
B                                           26
C                                           75
C(NE)                                    18
R                                             3
R(NE)                                      1

Total                                    128

I would also like to acknowledge the long-term planning and utter dedication of the Tūāpapa Rangahau team who, under the leadership of Marcus Williams, have led and managed the research support over the six-year evaluation period, the “mock” PBRF review in 2015 and the highly tactical approach to support for our academics at a time of significant disruption – thank you Marcus and team.

Applied research is a core part of our academic performance and we will include further recognition of this outstanding success at our mid-year staff event in July.

Ngā mihi
