Happy 2018 everyone! I can’t believe it’s February already! Some very interesting prevalence data was released on the 1st February, predicting the number of people living with or beyond cancer is expected to increase by 72% in the next 22 years.
That means that by 2040, it is expected that 1 person in 18 will be living with or have a personal history of cancer, compared to 1 in 22 that we currently see in Australia.
Obviously, earlier detection and treatment are two of the reasons for the predicted increase, and interestingly and of concern is that the poorest members of our community have lower survival rates, which reinforces the need to put more focus on those populations, which includes our elderly and indigenous populations.
The data highlights the need for ever increasing support from organisations like Cancer Council ACT to provide information, support services, advocacy and prevention education, as well as to continue research into cancer to help find better ways to diagnose, treat and manage cancer overall. We couldn’t do it without community support, and I thank all of our supporters for their ongoing contribution in helping us to provide service to our local community. We are here for those who need us
today or tomorrow; from the time of diagnosis, throughout treatment and beyond - every minute, every hour, every day. For something a little different, we are working with Canberra Theatre as they bring ‘A Pacifist’s Guide to the War on Cancer’ to the ACT in March for a short season. It’s a very different perspective on cancer and I understand it has had excellent reviews in the UK. We are delighted to have been asked by Canberra Theatre to be involved with this project. Please see the article in this newsletter for more information. Regards,
Sandra

Living Well After Cancer
Program
Cancer Council's popular Living Well After Cancer Program will be held again in Canberra on Saturday 17th March from 10.00am - 12.00pm. The Living Well After Cancer program is a free community education program that provides practical information and discussion for people who are cancer survivors, carers, family, friends and work colleagues.
Registrations for this event are essential as numbers are limited.
Australia’s new Cervical Screening Program
From December 2017, the two yearly Pap smear test has been replaced with a more sophisticated test that looks for the presence of human papilloma virus (HPV), which is the cause of the vast majority of cervical cancers. This new test is required only once every five years, and Cancer Council research shows that the new screening program will reduce cervical cancer rates and deaths by at least 20%.
How are your New Year’s resolutions going? Whether you committed to quitting smoking, reducing your alcohol intake or increasing exercise, it doesn't matter if you haven’t started yet - behaviour change can happen at any time. If you are thinking about quitting smoking, Cancer Council ACT can help.
3rd National Survey of Early Childhood Services on sun protection and practices
State and territory Cancer Councils have been committed to skin cancer prevention programs, advocacy and research for many decades and are leaders in this public health space.
The SunSmart Early Childhood Program was launched in the ACT back in 2004 and to date the vast majority (approx. 91%) of ACT early childhood services are active members of the program.
Every five years Cancer Council distributes a national survey across all early childhood services, and in March we will disseminate our third national survey to early childhood service providers on sun protection policies and practices. This survey is part of an ongoing national study that began in 2008.
Survey findings allow Cancer Council to develop a snapshot of how sun protection strategies are working in their jurisdiction, where improvements have been made and where more attention may be required. It also allows individual state and territory Cancer Councils to share positive findings with members of the National SunSmart Early Childhood Program.
For more information on the survey please contact Cancer Council ACT’s SunSmart Services Coordinator David Wild at david.wild@actcancer.org.
