Morning Bus Service Interest Survey

We are exploring the possibility of offering school bus routes for the morning commute. With our current bus fleet, we would be able to offer four routes with designated pick-up spots, such as grocery store parking lots. This would require either a walk or a quick drive to drop off your student(s) at the pick-up location, rather than a drive to Capitol Hill. Afternoon buses are also being considered, but we want to pilot the morning bus service option first.

Potential bus routes could include a northwest loop to Greenwood, a northeast loop to Maple Leaf, a southeast route to the Renton area, and a West Seattle route.

There will be a cost for this service. Price will depend on the ridership, so we have designed a short survey to gauge interest. We ask that you complete this survey by Feb. 1, 2019. We hope to have more detailed information about cost and routes in a few weeks.

Announcing Upper School Musical, Feb. 7-10

The Upper School Musical, Newsies, takes the stage at the Broadway Performance Hall, Feb. 7-10. This heartfelt production details the historic 1899 strike of the newsies of New York City against the monolithic Pulitzer publishing company. It features a cast of 50 actors, stage managers, and stage crew.

For the first time ever, The Northwest School String Orchestra will be playing all the music! With rousing ensemble numbers, dynamic dance sequences, and passionate cries for social justice, the musical also explores themes of loyalty, friendship, and the importance of family. The performance is appropriate for all ages and will sell out quickly. Click here to buy tickets.

Researching College Workshops for 11th Grade Parents, Jan. 29

Jan. 29, 8:00-9:30 am or 7:00-8:30 pm, Computer Lab

How can students and families best utilize the many resources available in the college search? The college counselors will lead parents through tools in Naviance, SCOIR, and Oba, deconstruct college websites, and provide a list of resources they have found most useful. While students will receive this information during flex time, we wanted to make this information available to parents as well.

Due to the availability of computers, each workshop is limited to thirty parents/guardians. We request that only one parent/guardian attend per household, so we can meet the demand for all families. If demand exceeds our capacity, we will schedule an additional workshop to accommodate families. E-mail Anna Wilsey to register.

Important Athletics Dates

There will be an Upper School boys' soccer meeting on Thursday, Jan. 31, 9:35-9:45 am, in the Dining Hall. Any students interested in participating are encouraged to attend!

Also, fall sports begin Aug. 26 (not Aug. 19, as was communicated earlier). Please mark your calendars if your Upper School student will be participating in cross country, girls' soccer, boys' ultimate, or girls' volleyball.

Financial Aid Deadline for 2019-20 School Year

The deadline to apply for financial aid for all families is Thursday, Feb. 7, 2019. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Director of Financial Aid Jonathan Hochberg at 206-816-6210.

Volunteer Opportunity with Dorm, Feb. 2

Students are invited to join the dorm at the Rainier Valley Food Bank for a volunteer opportunity. We will help distribute food and help clients shop for groceries. Interested students should email Ruth Huang by end of day Thursday, Jan. 31. We will depart from the dorm at 11:50 am and return by 3:30 pm.

Holiday on the Hill Update

We received some excellent news from Elliott Bay Book Company! We earned $2,200 in store credit, considerably more than last year, due in large part to the strong school-wide support. Thank you!

Winter Outdoor Program Trips and Ski Bus Information

The Outdoor Program will be busy in the winter with some great trips lined up. Students have the opportunity for cross country skiing at Snoqualmie Pass, snowshoeing in the Cascades, and cycling around the San Juans. More information for the trips can be found on the Outdoor Program webpage.

In addition to these trips, Northwest will also run a ski bus for night skiing at The Summit at Snoqualmie Pass on Fridays, Jan. 25, Feb. 1, Feb. 8, and March 1.

  • 9th Grade: Feb. 6
