MEX IT UP AT SUBWAYSubway Germany has a new Mexican-themed range including the Fajita Festiva Sub, the Carne Caramba Wrap and the spicy Nacho Box. The Carne Caramba wrap for example features juicy beef supreme, bacon, creamy guacamole, and not just one but three sauces; BBQ, Chipotle Southwest and Dorito’s Nacho Cheese sauce. Click here to watch the Subway Mex It Up clip >> Meanwhile, in selected stores across the UK, Subway has launched a vegan version of its Meatball Marinara, complete with vegan meatballs and vegan cheese. 2. AVOCADO IN THE FAST LANEOnce upon a time, an ingredient like fresh avocado wouldn’t have made it onto a QSR menu. Well Burger King Singapore is introducing the Avocado Whopper and the Avocado Tendergrill Chicken Burger, following its earlier release of the Avocado Croissant’wich last month on its breakfast menu. Each burger comes with fresh slices of avocado, and you can top up 90 cents for three extra ‘avo’ slices. In other Burger King news, it is planning to roll out its plant-based Rebel Whopper and Rebel Chicken King across Europe, following its launch in Sweden during the summer. 3. DOMINO’S PIZZA BUBBLESBubble tea (boba) was first invented in a Taiwan tea house over 30 years ago. The popularity of uniquely sweet and chewy milky tea drink with tapioca balls has since spread worldwide. Domino’s Taiwan has now created a limited-edition dessert pizza covered in black sugar pearls, honey, and cheese, with a soft and chewy texture. We’re now familiar with chocolate/Nutella dessert pizzas in Europe; this is another sweet & savoury twist with a special East meets West twist. Staying with Asia, this Halloween, Domino’s Japan unleashed a Roulette pizza with a hidden slice topped with ghost pepper sauce. Then, as a treat, Domino’s offers a Triple Chocolate pizza with a spider web design on a flaky thin crust. So... trick or treat? 4. FTG RIFE WITH INNOVATIONThe UK food-to-go arena is buzzing with newcomers and new strategies to maximise the out of home opportunity. From Morrisons new Market Kitchen at Canning Town to the new M&S Foodhall in Clapham featuring a wood fired pizza oven among other food options. Harrods has opened its first standalone café H in Henley, offering a click and collect service, while bakery chain Paul has reinvented its Express concept. McDonald’s UK has opened its first dark kitchen to supply the rising demand for home delivery, according to Property Week. In the US, restaurants are also recognizing the shift in sales to off-premises (60% of sales - NRA/Technomic). Some 74% are investing in off-premise developments for 2020. 5. CHANGING GERMAN TASTESThe younger generation of German consumers are shifting away from pork towards beef and chicken, according to BTG’s German Snack Barometer 2019 (1,200 respondents aged 14-65 years). While beef, pork and chicken represent around 30% each of meat-based dishes eaten out of home, there are slight differences among age groups, with over-40s more likely to order pork. Despite the rise of plant-based ingredients, just 6% of respondents said they didn’t eat meat (9% women, 3% men). Pork is also under pressure at retail, where prices have risen by 8.3% year-on-year due to African Swine Fever supply challenges (Agricultural Market Information Society (AMI), Sept 2018 vs 19). 6. 2020 TRENDING COLOURSCool greens, striking blues and energetic purples will replace warmer colours on the food palette next year, as reported by Technomic. Restaurants are forecasted to embrace foodie trends from CBD to edible insects, sweet limes to seaweed snacks. Delivery and takeout are set for continued growth, while restaurants also keen to see a boost in dine-in traffic with attractive dine-in deals and exciting LTO’s. Other efforts to expand and diversify see a variety of high-protein plant-based offerings and notable sustainability efforts. 7. PICARD’S GRAB ‘N GO SNACK BARFrench premium frozen food specialist is trialling digital vending machines in partnership with logistics company Sofrilog, going on site to target companies, schools and hospitals. Consumers can choose between 17 different dishes ranging from €2.95-5.50) from savoury ready meals to desserts (cutlery also provided). The concept was conceived back in 2016, and first launched in June 2019. To date, Picard has established 6 machines across the Paris region and could eventually work with branded suppliers alongside its own offer. 8. BAGELRITO BREAKFAST HYBRIDFrom croissant’wich to cronut, the trend toward hybrid bakery products has died down recently, however the Bagelrito has caught our attention as this could appeal to sausage roll and pasty lovers. Einstein Bros has created the first ever Bagelrito, a tortilla stuffed with eggs, bacon, turkey sausage, three cheeses, hash brown, salsa and green chilies then baked in an Asiago bagel. The Bagelrito is in trial stage at various locations in Colorado, where the company is based, with initial runs selling out quickly. Einstein Bros is famous for pushing bagel boundaries with other menu items such as a Crispy Chicken & Tater Egg Breakfast Sandwich and Mac and Cheese Bagel. 9. SERIOUS ABOUT HERBS It’s time to start taking herbs seriously. Recently we mentioned Mexican herbs are next in the culinary spotlight (beyond coriander/cilantro). The above-mentioned M&S revamp includes live herbs from Infarm, while Avril Supermarket Sante in Canada has taken this a step further with an in-store suspended greenhouse. It is the first supermarket to use CultiGo – click here to view >>, a revolutionary and environmentally-friendly vertical farming platform that can grow a variety of organic micro-herbs on-site all year round.
