A 100% plant-based version of its fan-favourite, Teriyaki chicken, Unreal Teriyaki tastes and looks just like the original recipe, the ideal alternative for flexitarians. The new product is packed with protein, has a low-fat count and is free from artificial colours, hydrogenated and trans fats. In addition, Subway has revised the packaging to unbleached 100% recyclable natural packaging. A recent Yougov study in June reported that while 65% of Milennials are not following any particular diet (65%), their interest in plant-based products remains high (53%). 2. GRUBHUB'S MOST ORDERED ITEMSGrubhub, the American third-party delivery company, has released trends found among orders placed during the first 6 months of this year. With more than half a million orders placed every day, comfort foods were a top pick, especially at the beginning of the pandemic. In addition, plant-based orders increased by 135% compared to 2019, with plant-based burgers taking the biggest lead. Spicy chicken sandwiches rose by 299% and Mexican dishes such as beef burritos and chimichangas also got a boost from consumers looking to spice up mealtimes. Açaí bowls and vanilla shakes were top orders so far this year, with more nutritious items ordered before the afternoon. 3. THE SPOTIFY OF COOKINGThe Pass, an online recipe-sharing platform, has recently launched, featuring signature recipes from 40 London restaurants, from BBQ Pulled Jackfruit Tacos to Chicken Shish Kebabs and Bolognese Ragu. The new app is being described as the “Spotify of cooking” and was built in just three weeks to support the restaurant industry. While the ever-evolving virtual cookbook app is free, readers are encouraged to donate to Hospitality Action. Consumers can also expect initiatives such as recipe boxes and delivery from food and drink suppliers who currently sell directly to the public. The long-term vision is to expand ‘The Pass’ to a more comprehensive hub of recipes from the world’s greatest restaurants with videos, live cook-a-long content, in-app shopping for ingredients and recipe boxes. 4. CHRISTMAS 2020 TRENDSThe Food People have revealed their predictions for Christmas trends this year considering COVID-19. Many other holidays and celebrations have been put off course due to restrictions so the thought is that Christmas festivities might just be the same. The three opportunities they identify are: Touch of Luxury, Experience and Comforting Classics. From spending more time at home, consumers treat themselves through luxe products to break up the ordinary. Brands will need to get creative through socially distant experiences via cook-a-longs or even dining in igloos. Lastly, consumers will stick to tried and tested recipes, seeking comfort in traditional favourites. 5. ENVIRONMENT-FRIENDLY WHOPPERSBurger King has tweaked the diet of the cattle they source in a bid to tackle climate change. The cows will be fed 100 grams of lemongrass daily in the hopes of reducing methane emissions by 33% a day. Burger King is working with scientists in the U.S. and Mexico on their ‘Cow’s Menu’ programme to test and develop its new formula and have said it is now partnering with several suppliers to replicate the pilot and expand globally. The fast-food chain introduced its new lemongrass-fed beef Whoppers at select restaurants across the US this week. 6. PIZZA HUT JAPAN SPICE THINGS UPPizza Hut Japan is serving up Keema Curry and Flaming Meat Sauce this summer. The new menu addition offers two types of heat and is jokingly called the "slightly spicy half & half" pizza. One half of the pizza uses a "flaming meat sauce", a chili pepper-infused red meat sauce with jalapeños, while the other half is topped with spicy Keema curry, a traditional Indian dish. Pizza Hut Japan has been known to offer extremely hot slices in the past, such as its ghost pepper Russian Roulette for Halloween. 7. INDUSTRY IMPACT IF NO-DEAL BREXITIn the event of a no-deal Brexit at the end of the year, UK retailers and manufacturers are warning consumers of higher prices on most household items and groceries come 2021. If the UK leaves the EU single market, new custom and health checks will be placed on imports at the border. Arla Foods, a Denmark-headquartered dairy giant, predicts brands will have no choice but to pass on additional costs early on. It will take time and investment to ease the disruption across all supply chains. 8. LAY'S MENU FAVOURITE FLAVOURS Lays are getting creative with 5 new crisp flavours inspired by signature dishes from restaurants across the U.S. The ‘Nashville Hot Chicken’ flavour is inspired by Party Fowl in Nashville, in addition to the new ‘Philly Cheesesteak’ inspired by Geno’s Steaks in Philadelphia. There is also a wavy-style ‘Carnitas Street Taco’ flavour with inspiration coming from El Torito in Los Angeles. The ‘Chile Relleno’ is inspired by Cocina Azul in Albuquerque with strong notes of poblano pepper and cheese. Lastly, there is a kettle cooked launch called ‘New York Style Pizza’ inspired by Grimaldi’s in New York City. The new flavours will be available in retailers across the U.S. from 13th July for a limited time. 9. DOMINO'S CRUSH DELIVERIESDomino's U.S. has exceeded same-store sales forecasts set for the second quarter due to limited food service options available. In the UK, Scottish singer, Lewis Capaldi, realised the food cart on his train was not open due to COVID-19 restrictions and so tweeted Domino’s, "I HAVE AN URGENT REQUEST CAN YOU PLEASE DM ME, ONCE AGAIN IT IS A MATTER OF UTMOST IMPORTANCE THANK YOU. Your friend, Lewis Capaldi x". The Darlington-based Domino’s quickly responded, offering platform-side delivery of a Pepperoni Passion as the singer’s train pulled into the station. The digital-savvy brand continues to see positive sales momentum due to their reliability and adaptability.
