This special event is marked by some classes dressing up as 100 year olds, collecting 100 items, and engaging in several math related activities. The feeling is not just one of being present for 100 days, but of true accomplishment as our students reflect on what they have mastered so far this year in the areas English, mathematics, science, cultural studies, and the arts. In short, I can verify that your children have learned much and they are excited about sharing it with you. As a follow up to this time of reviewing the past 100 days, our students are now preparing for their student led conferences (SLC) on March 22. Last year was the first time TIS hosted such conferences that put students in the center and allowed us to listen to their thoughts on the year. Parents, students and teachers found the process to be extremely rewarding since it gave the children a chance to express their own strengths and areas of growth. In addition, students were able to demonstrate how they progressed through the stages of learning in specific subjects so that parents understood how challenging their classes could be. TIS will send out the digital sign up forms for SLCs right after we return from mid-winter break next week. Please let the office know if you have any questions. Looking Forward, Robert S. Jackson, Director Physical Science Students in Physical Science are finishing up the chemistry portion of the course. In lab they investigated the properties of polymers. After the break they will begin their exploration of physics. Middle and Secondary students have begun preparations for Student Lead Conferences. Over the next few weeks, students will spend time reflecting on their learning this year and looking forward to their transition to next year. Parents, take some time to check-in with your student to see how they are progressing with their presentation for conferences. We look forward to seeing you all later in March. Additional details on conferences will be coming soon. Feelings and Facial Expressions The students in Elementary Introductory French I are talking about their feelings and how to recognize facial expressions. Using “Make a face” is helpful and funny for the students to better memorize the expressions. All the cards are lay out and the student choose the mouth and eyes that match. They answered to the questions like: Can you make me a happy face? Can you make me a sad face? etc. We used the face template even for drawing emotion faces and students were able to respond to them in French. Math Week! Math Week is here! Throughout the week there are daily math challenge problems in students' math classes, and on Friday we will celebrate the 100th day of school. The week will culminate with a Math Carnival in the gym with the whole school participating in math games together. As a school we will be raising money to support a local Roma community center called House of Hope. This center provides supplies, education, and hope for people in need. Students are encouraged to bring in 100 leke coins to the cafeteria all next week to support this great cause. The 100th day of school is also a chance to get creative. Students can create a project out of 100 items and bring it to Ms. Eva in the library next week. Older students can choose to create a poster showing different ways to express 100. Participants will earn a prize and will have their work on display in the cafeteria. Just Playing?! NO!!! It is so inspiring and encouraging to see some 10 year old students so eagerly and persistently trying to figure out the answers to questions of a board game during the After School Activity. They get carried away by the intriguing clues, and they diligently use their acquired knowledge to find the correct answers. It is so enjoyable to look at their puzzled or proudly beamed faces when interacting with each other - in such a manner which is greatly appreciated. Furthermore, they are TRULY LEARNING, not just playing!!! Happy Valentines Day! Warm wishes come from all the Albanian students to all of you. In Albanian Language the students made cards for this special day, to give to their dear ones. They wrote beautiful, touching words and decorated the cards with lots of LOVE. 11 YO Cultural Studies 11 YO Cultural Studies students are completing their unit on Ancient Egypt and the African Kingdoms of Nubia and Kush. In this unit we made topographical maps of the Nile River and analyzed the influence of geography on the development of ancient Egyptian culture, religion, economy, government and society. We also made digital travel guides to Ancient Nubia and model obelisks with our names written in hieroglyphics. Cuentacuentos Spanish students enjoyed a lot the unit 5 "Back when I was a kid..." and they presented their self as kid and they wrote stories of their childhood on our Cuentacuentos board. Low-voltage current electricity 9 year olds explore low-voltage current electricity. They are shocked with surprise while creating circuits of electric current flows in a closed loop. There was a hairy surprise when Giulia created electricity and activated mini propellers before she could switch it off. Ancient Egypt Students in the six year old class have been busy learning about Ancient Egypt. They look forward to showing their exhibition to other classes and parents after the break. They will share their knowledge of what they learned about pyramids, mummies, King Tut, scarab beetles, Hieroglyphics, and the Nile River. It is an exhibition not to be missed, well done Sixes!
