Depression and Anxiety During Pregnancy and Postpartum Linked to Sexual Decline
Some women who have depression/anxiety symptoms (DAS) during pregnancy and postpartum experience sexual decline after delivery, according to recent research.
American and Brazilian researchers used interviews and a questionnaire to assess sexual decline among lower-income women in São Paulo, Brazil. The women were interviewed during pregnancy and again at some point during the eighteen months after childbirth.
During the postpartum period, the women also completed a questionnaire to assess depression and anxiety symptoms.
Overall, about 21% of the women reported a decline in their sex lives after delivery. Women who experienced DAS during both pregnancy and postpartum or during the postpartum period only were more likely to experience decline.
Age and history of miscarriage were also associated with sexual decline.
