Greg's Message

Dear Parents and Friends of St Anne’s
I hope that all families enjoyed their Easter holidays. Having spoken to many students over the last few days, I’ve been able to ascertain that the children enjoyed their break, but are now looking forward to reconnecting with their friends and teachers.

At Tuesday's assembly we will have an Anzac memorial service.

Learning and Teaching

The St. Anne’s 2021 Times Table Challenge!

Research has shown that when students have a sound knowledge of times tables, they are more likely
to perform higher-order mathematical processes efficiently. Repeated systematic practice for these basic facts is a building block for future mathematical learning. This is by no means the only or most important thing to learn for early mathematicians, however studies show that developing muscle memory is the key to making the retrieval of basic times tables facts fluent for students.

Next Monday, the 26th of April, students from Year 2 to year 6 will be bringing home a ‘Times Table Challenge’ booklet. These booklets will remain at home, and students will be expected to complete one page out of the booklet each night. This will continue for 6 weeks. Students can also be encouraged to use online games/activities or card/dice games as suggested below for further motivation. At school, students will be assessed this week in speed and accuracy, and this assessment will be repeated at the end of the 6 week blitz. Students will also be continuing to practice these skills in maths lessons at school each day.

Games for the family

  • Dice games
  • Roll 2 dice and multiply (best with 10 sided dice but use whatever you have). For a challenge make this timed.
  • Roll one die and focus on multiplying it by one number.
  • Card games
  • Like ‘Snap’ each player takes turns to place a card down. Select a number to multiply by, and call out the answer. Whoever gets the answer correct keeps the cards.
  • Speed drills: choose a number to multiply by and time for one minute how many times you can get a correct answer. Try to increase the number of correct answers each time.
  • Online games and activities
  • Timestables
  • Topmarks
  • Mathmammoth

Thank you for your support and we look forward to sharing some positive results with you soon!
