Remake Learning Days  -  Happening Now!

Remake Learning Days Across America is an innovative learning festival for families and youth! Taking root in 17+ regions, these hands-on and engaging events are designed for kids of all ages at libraries, schools, tech centers, museums, play spaces, community centers and more!

These events are designed for parents and caregivers to learn alongside their kids and offer relevant and engaging educational experiences for youth of all ages (pre-K through high school). There are even some professional development events for adults as well! All events are free or at low cost, and many are in-person, hybrid, or virtual.

Here are some Penn State and STEM partner groups that are participating:

Robotics Expo - hosted by AAUW and the Centre County 4H on May 8, 2021.

ENGINE of Central PA  - launches an inaugural Remake Learning Days Festival in Central PA, joining Southwestern and Southeastern PA for the first statewide Remake Learning Days festival.

The Penn State Radiation Science and Engineering Center is hosting two free, virtual events for students in middle and high school:

  • It's Radioactive -  learn about Marie Curie's discovery of Radioactivity on May 12, 2021.
  • Penn State Reactor tour - have a look at the only and longest operating research reactor in Pennsylvania on May 13, 2021.

Space Day with WPSU - children in grades K-5 can experience a virtual day of space exploration on May 15, 2021.

Explore all the possibilities of Remake Learning Days throughout the nation using the link below!  Please note that most events and activities require advance registration.

Science Outreach and Communication Course Projects

Did you know we teach Penn State courses? This semester, we taught our “Science Outreach and Communication” class virtually. Typically, these students participate in our Exploration-U event, but this semester 11 graduate students created various virtual outreach and events!

Some students planned live events, which included a lesson on recycling and sustainability to Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) members, another taught climate change and ecology topics through dance choreography, and a third group led an engaging lesson on satellites to a 5th grade classroom.

Other students in the course created content that is asynchronous and can be interacted with any time. Please check out their creative projects!

  1. “What Happens to the Human Body in Space?” – Have you ever wondered what happens to an astronaut’s body when they travel in space? Challenge yourself by exploring this website and completing all six levels to learn more. This project was designed for middle schoolers to adults! Click here to access the website.
  2. “Ocean Acidification ASMR” – Have you heard of autonomous sensory meridian response (ASMR)? This genre of video is designed to be relaxing and satisfying to watch. One group designed ASMR videos on the topic of ocean acidification with the idea that presenting a large-scale environmental problem in a relaxing way will help people learn. Click here, here, here, and here to watch the four video series on TikTok.
  3. “Phases of the Moon and More!” - This project was designed to be an at-home experiment for students in middle or high school and were made to address the NextGen science standards (5-ESS1-2 and MS-ESS1-1). The project includes a worksheet and a video demonstration of how you can use objects at home to view the phases of the moon. You can even prove that Venus has phases too! Visit our Virtual Science Festival for the activity!

We are so impressed with the level of creativity and hard work our students demonstrated this semester!
