However, consumers are also feeling more secure about the UK’s relationship with the EU following the December 24th Brexit agreement. This impact of clarity is beginning to show with a 23% drop in negative sentiment and double-digit improvements in terms of safety, security & personal finances in Jan vs Oct 2020. 2. ST. PATRICK'S DAY MEAL KITSWith Saint Patrick’s Day just around the corner, restaurants have gotten creative in how they plan to celebrate the Irish holiday during lockdown. Many operators in the UK have designed Irish-inspired meal kits for customers to make at home to celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day safely this year. Honest Burgers UK has teamed up with Guinness and Ireland’s Handsome Burger to offer a meal kit which features the classic Honest beef patty, topped with Guinness-candied bacon, shoestring fries, two-year-aged Kylemore Farmhouse cheese, Handsome Sauce and Guinness bacon gravy. 3. STREET FOOD RENAISSANCE IN CHINATraditional street food stalls are on the rise again in Chengdu, capital of China’s southwestern Sichuan province known for their open air lifestyle. In a post-Covid push, the government has been encouraging small vendors to set up their stalls again to jumpstart the economy. This resurgence of street food enables Chengdu to return to its roots with traditional dishes such as guokui (crispy, meat-filled pancake topped with fermented vegetables and Sichuan peppercorn), dandan mian (noodles in spicy sauce), tang you guo zi (chewy rice balls glazed with sugar and sesame seeds) and chuan chuan (hot pot with ingredients served on sticks). 4. AMAZON FRESH OPENS IN LONDONAmazon has opened a checkout-less grocery store in London, its first retail site outside North America. The store features Amazon’s ‘Just Walk Out’ technology where customers scan their phones on arrival, fill their bags with products and leave without any interaction. The store features a grab-and-go hot and chilled selection, fresh bakery products, chilled cabinets and freezers and a store cupboard aisle stocked with Amazon own-label essentials, accompanied by products from Morrisons and Booths. 5. GROWTH OF CHICKEN SANDWICHESCompetition is heating up in the chicken sandwich wars as many brands recognise the opportunity for growth and high consumer demand. Wendy’s, Taco Bell, Burger King & McDonald’s have all debuted new spins on their chicken sandwich offerings this month. Burger King has replaced their crispy chicken sandwich with a new hand-breaded version while McDonald’s have launched a new chicken sandwich range featuring a Crispy Chicken, Spicy Chicken and Deluxe Chicken Sandwich. 6. GLOBAL FLAVOURS ON THE RISEFood delivery service, DoorDash, unveiled its “State of Flavor in America” report, which uncovered Mexican, Chinese and Tex-Mex as the most popular cuisines in 2020. In addition, Taiwanese cuisine orders increased 807% year on year, French increased 501%, Filipino 313% and Moroccan 255%. Consumers are showing a reinvigorated interest in authentic global dishes since COVID-19 has halted travel and are more daring with their food choices. These global flavours are being combined with classic comfort foods such as tacos and chicken wings. 7. SUSTAINABILITY AT TOP OF AGENDASustainability is at the top of most brands’ agendas as of late. Shake Shack is currently testing eco-friendly cutlery, straws and water bottles. The regenerative disposables are fully compostable and contain no synthetic plastics, glue or PLA. In addition, Chipotle has announced it will begin correlating executive compensation to sustainability goals. These goals are focussed on people, food, animals and the environment with the aim of becoming more transparent of their carbon footprint and fulfilling mission to cultivate a better world. 8. LATEST OFFERINGS ON U.S. MENUSNation’s Restaurant News highlighted the following innovative additions to American menus on their latest Menu Tracker. Buffalo Wild Wings has introduced a ‘Truffalo’ sauce for a limited time. The new sauce combines white truffles with spicy buffalo sauce that provides a kick of heat with a sweet finish. Brooklyn’s Grimaldi’s Pizzeria has a new pizza combination featuring artichoke pesto, asparagus, bacon, red onion and topped with a drizzle of red-pepper-infused honey. Lastly, for an interesting plant-based seafood substitute, Bareburger is testing two griddled not-tuna burgers. 9. LOOKING AT A QUICK 'QUEFamous Dave’s is set to open its first Quick ‘Que streamlined restaurant model this September. The Minnesota-based chain traditionally offers table service in a casual dining format but are now working with international restaurant company, BBQ Holdings, for a solution to upgrade their strategy. The Quick ‘Que format, which will add drive-thru lanes, provides a more convenient customer experience and profitable model for franchisees.
