We're loyal, not just local.

Hello,

After a mild autumn we're straight into winter with the frosty, foggy mornings and cold winds! Make sure that pets who spend a lot of time outside have shelter that protects them from the wind, rain and frosts. Choose a place that is elevated and protected from the elements as much as possible and fill with dry blankets. For those inside pets be careful around heaters and fires. They will be attracted to the warmth just like we are but also have the potential to burn themselves so ensuring they can’t get too close is essential. Even in the cold weather make sure you keep exercising your dog, you want to try and keep them at a healthy weight and reduce boredom.

This newsletter has a focus on dental which plays a vitally important role in your pets health. Did you know that the most common cause of bad breath is gum disease? This is caused by plaque and tartar accumulation that produces reddened, inflamed and often bleeding gums.

Read on below for further advice on your pets dental habits, what to watch out for with your pets teeth and your chance to win with several competitions we're running.

Thank you from the Team at North Canterbury Vets.

Dental Disease in Cats & Dogs

Dental disease is one of the most common conditions we see in adult dogs and cats. This is without question an extremely painful condition, just think back to the last time you had a toothache! Studies show that most dogs and cats over three years of age suffer from some form of periodontal disease and unfortunately this is often overlooked because many animals resent their mouths being handled and unlike humans will sometimes continue to eat even with severe dental disease and pain.
