From the editors...

The staff newsletter is produced every fortnight by the Internal Communications team so we can share news, announcements, selected events and some requests for help. 

If you wish to communicate around the University, the newsletter is just one way to do that. Please check our Methods of Internal Communication webpage, and feel free to get in touch if you have any questions.

The next newsletter will distributed on Wednesday 5 October, and the deadline is 4pm on Friday 30 September.

Nominate an inspirational student nurse for an award

The School of Nursing and Health Sciences is looking for your nominations for Inspirational Student Nurse of the Year! 

This award is part of a series of awards that have been developed to recognise the work of students, teaching, and professional services staff. Find out more and how to make a nomination on the website.

Infant and pregnancy care rooms

Dedicated rooms for infant feeding, expressing or pregnancy rest are available in Tower Basement and SLS Discovery Centre. Bookings and keys are available at the Tower and Discovery Centre receptions. Contact Jane Illes for more information.

Fourth years use beer bottles to exhibit student work

Students from the School of Art & Design are taking art to the public with their novel collective, Selection Box.

Fourth-year Illustration students Jasmine Holt and Kali Wallace ran a competition to get fellow students and budding artists into the public eye by exhibiting their submissions on 60 beer bottles during their event ‘Art on Beer' last Thursday.

The 60 unique bottles, sponsored by Eden Mill and Abernyte Brewery, were revealed in The George Orwell on the night. All proceeds went to the charity HELM.

Peppa Pig and the Principal open recently expanded nursery

The Principal, Professor Sir Pete Downes and his new friends, Peppa Pig, Olaf and a Paw Patrol Puppy, opened the recently expanded nursery earlier this month. 

The nursery now accommodates infants from birth as well as pre-school children up to 5 years. and welcomes the children of both students and staff at the University.

Dundee dentists shift the behaviour of Perth prisoners

A health coaching initiative developed by the Dental Health Services Research Unit (DHSRU) at the School of Dentistry has led to a significant shift in the behaviour and wellbeing of prisoners at HM Prison Perth.

Dundee Literary Festival 10th anniversary

Dundee Literary Festival 2016 is celebrating its 10th birthday in style, pulling in an A-list actor, internationally acclaimed songwriter and a party fit for The Broons and Oor Wullie.

Critically acclaimed writers who will be appearing include James Kelman, Don Paterson and Jenni Fagan. Singer-songwriter Roddy Woomble will be talking about his book, and Liz Lochhead will be joined by saxophonist Steve Kettley for a spellbinding performance. There will also be a tea dance at the Bonar Hall to celebrate 80 years of The Broons and Oor Wullie.

In addition, X-Men and Goldeneye star Alan Cumming will make an appearance to talk about his new memoir, You Gotta Get Bigger Dreams. 

Wednesday 19 October to Sunday 23 October, with additional events on 24 September and 25 November.

The Support Hub is officially open

Student Rector (and record-breaking long-distance cyclist) Mark Beaumont officially opened the new Support Hub last week. 

The Support Hub aims to cater for a range of support needs for staff and students, and is set to bring together existing services which provide disability, mental health, student funding, counselling and health support across the University.

Tackling Climate Change Working Lunch (27 Sept)

Kirsty Lewin and her colleague James Johnston will be conducting a CECHR working lunch next week.

Kirsty heads up the Climate Change Hub, in the Scottish Government’s Energy and Climate Change Directorate. Her work in the Directorate has included major climate change projects as well as contributions to the development of the Scottish Government’s Economic Strategy, particularly its low carbon economy priority. She is also interested in behavioural economics and staff development. Previous to this post, she led the Scottish Government’s Sustainable Transport Team.

University Prayers – Tuesdays at 12.30–12.50pm in the Quiet Room
Weekly informal prayers led by students and members of the Chaplaincy Team.

Bible Study – Tuesdays at 12.20–1pm in the Glass House
Would you like to know more about the Bible? You are welcome to join us in our weekly studies in the Glass House in the Chaplaincy. We have been meeting since 1981, although we are not all founder members! Join us and help to keep the group going.

International Families’ Group – Wednesdays at 10am–12pm in the Common Room
You and your pre-school children are warmly invited to meet with other International Students’ Families. We meet during school term time in the Chaplaincy Common Room. This is a good opportunity to meet new friends and practice your English, and the children enjoy playing with toys together (all children must be accompanied by an adult and supervised at all times).

Researchers - make sure your papers are eligible for REF

Calling all researchers! Make sure your papers are eligible for REF by depositing your accepted manuscripts to PURE within three months of acceptance. The Research Services team can provide help with publishing Open Access, compliance with funder requirements, and managing research data management (including drafting data management plans). Make the most of the opportunity to receive support by emailing discovery@dundee.ac.uk or visiting the website.

Centre for Technology In Learning (CTIL)

CTIL is responsible for supporting and enhancing teaching and learning in the digital space across the University. In the coming academic year, LLC will launch a series of initiatives shaped by a new conversation about developing a One Dundee digital ecosystem for learning and teaching.

Dundee University Sub Aqua Club

Dundee University Sub Aqua Club has a large varity of members from students to locals, who plan and host trips together. Staff members participate in, and are welcome to attend, these trips and meetings.

The club meets in Dalhousie on the second floor of Block 2 on Tuesdays at 6pm. Matriculation fees are £55. The club is open to people of all experience levels and can be contacted at subaqua@dundee.ac.uk and on our Facebook page.

Male subfertility research - volunteers required

University researchers studying male subfertility, in collaboration with Ninewells Assisted Conception Unit, seek volunteer sperm donors for research and post-graduate teaching. £20 per sample.
