Have you tried doing any talks on 'NHS structures'? It's an absolute nightmare. Apart from the gazillions of bodies, there is the other small matter of having to change your slides every few years. Or, depending on your experience of the NHS, maybe re-using some of your old slides!

Either way, it is no picnic at all, with the added problem being that no one quite knows whether the latest iteration is, indeed, the "final piece of the puzzle" or just adding one more layer of complexity.

Lets take a step back and just use diabetes as an example, just to avoid the usual dingbat response such as "what do you know about dementia, huh?". So, we have NHS England, then we have four regional teams. We also now have 44 STPs and 50 Vanguards.

Let's then add into the pot 15 Academic Health networks, 12 Strategic Clinical Networks. Then let's now factor in 209 (or whatever they are now) CCGs, 150 odd acute providers, who knows how many community providers and many, many GP surgeries? My apologies to all those who I forgot.
Trying to have a unified policy to tackle variation? Well, thank the Lord that the 12 labours of Hercules didn't involve sorting out care within the NHS, thats all I would say!

Insulin injection errors can be lowered by 20 per cent by using a special medication device, a new study has found.

A team from Cardiff University carried out research on a gadget called NeedleBay, which was developed to help make the lives of people with diabetes easier, when it comes to preparing their insulin needles. To read more, click here.

Babies born to mothers with gestational diabetes are at an increased risk of suffering from adverse health outcomes, research has shown.

In a study of nearly 800,000 births in France, which took place after 22 weeks in 2012, of which 7.24 per cent of the mothers had been diagnosed with gestational diabetes. To read more, click here. 

Closed loop systems improve glucose control while also alleviating the risk of hypoglycaemia in adults, research has shown.

The device, otherwise known as the artificial pancreas, is a technological aid for managing type 1 diabetes, and comprises of a continuous glucose monitor (CGM), which sends glucose reading every few minutes to an insulin pump. To read more, click here. 

Leicester’s Adult Inpatient Diabetes team has been shortlisted for the BMJ Awards Clinical Leadership Team for 2017, it has been announced.

The project, which is run by the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust, and was set up in In response to the NaDia 2011 results.
