HarborWalkConcept rendering by SEH In our previous newsletter, we shared the exciting news that the Harbor District Riverwalk Overlay Zone was adopted by the City of Milwaukee in December 2018. With the overlay in place, Harbor District, Inc. and the City of Milwaukee recently issued a Request for Proposals for the Preparation of Design Standards for the Harbor District Riverwalk. These design standards will develop an overall aesthetic for the Riverwalk, include ideas for some challenging sections of the Riverwalk network, and create concepts for larger public access points and nodes along the network. These ideas will be developed during 2019 and will apply to future Riverwalk segments. The first section of Riverwalk is under construction now as part of Michels Corporation's R1VER development at 1st & Becher. A 3/4 mile section of Riverwalk will be designed and constructed in the near future as part of the Komatsu Mining Company development at the former Solvay Coke & Gas Co. site on East Greenfield Avenue. La Merenda Marketplace offers locally sourced meat and moreTwelve years ago, chef Peter Sandroni bought a renovated woodworking shop at 125 E. National Avenue and opened La Merenda in the heart of the Harbor District. At the time, he couldn’t afford real estate in the Third Ward and thought that Bay View was saturated. In 2013 he purchased the 1860’s, Civil War era house around the corner at 809 S. Barclay Street. He developed a patio for the restaurant and used the house as extra storage. Fast forward to 2019. The vintage house has been transformed into La Merenda Marketplace, an intimate, corner butcher shop where loyal customers can purchase locally sourced meats, house-made sausage, organic eggs, local cheeses, ½ price bottles of wine and more. Items are displayed in a cold case with an expanded menu board of items.
The Barclay Street storefront is unique because customers are able to interact directly with owner Peter, a “chef that can butcher” and Dan Bolton, a “butcher that can cook.” They share recipes, cooking tips and their expertise with anyone who stops in. The products, all from Wisconsin farms, are extremely fresh and offer a taste of items on the menus of La Merenda and Engine Company No. 3. Plans for the future include adding a space for fresh produce provided by Pinehold Gardens and Turtle Creek Gardens and fresh, off-the-grill items offered on the patio on summer Saturdays. Farewell LindsayPhoto: Lindsay Frost presents a concept for the Habitat Hotel It is with a heavy heart that the Harbor District bids farewell to Lindsay Frost as she continues her career at the Milwaukee County Parks. Lindsay served the Harbor District as the Water Projects Manager for two and a half years. Among many responsibilities she worked on the Habitat Hotels project, the Grand Trunk Wetland Restoration, and researched opportunities for a Trash Wheel. Her energy and enthusiasm for her work was infectious. We aim to do her proud by building off the partnerships and cutting edge environmental projects that she worked hard on. The Milwaukee County Parks are lucky to have her in the Engagement Manager role. Job OpportunitiesWantable Wantable is an online lifestyle service for busy people on the go.
