Greg's Message

Hello Parents and Friends of St. Anne’s
I hope that all families enjoyed their long weekend. I’m looking forward to a great night this Saturday at our dinner dance at Fenix.

Enrolments
We will be starting to organise class structures shortly. It would be appreciated if parents could advise me if their child will not be attending St. Anne’s next year (current Foundation to Year 5 students.)

Hockey
The majority of our Year 5/6 students will be playing in a hockey tournament this Friday at Box Hill. We are fielding two boys’ teams and one girls’ team.

Last day of term
Term two concludes at 1pm on Friday 28th June. At last week’s meeting of the Parents and Friends Association it was agreed that the children will be allowed to wear casual clothes to school on June 28th. Students are asked to bring along a gold coin donation on this day. Money raised will help offset the cost of the recently purchased Chinese Elm trees. Term three commences on Monday 15th July at 8:50am.

Lost Property
An Alta Black Fit Bit has been lost in the school.  If found please return to the office.

  • The Sacrament of Confirmation will be celebrated at St Anne’s on  Saturday 17th August at 3.00 pm.
  • Confirmation Faith Evening: Tuesday 30th July
  • Confirmation Reflection Day Friday 9th August

Social Justice

As our Social Justice Captains Jessica, Lucinda and Nathan mentioned at assembly, please search through your wardrobes for any unused blankets or jackets/coats of any sizes to donate to our Vinnies appeal.
This is a very good way of you showing your child how we help our wider community without having to constantly put our hands in our pockets for the ‘gold coin’ collections. If you have any non perishable goods or toiletries to give if you don’t have coats or blankets, please send them along.

Piggy backing on from the donation of warm clothing, on Wednesday the 26th June is the Feast of the Sacred Heart. At 10.00 am we have a whole school mass.
Each classroom will (in the next few days) have a box put in front of their room with items of foods/toiletries that we are collecting for Vinnies. Please be generous with your donations and let those boxes overflow! These will be collected after mass by the Vinnies representatives in the parish. The only requisite is that the food is in date please.
Let our boxes overflow with your goods and generosity!

Student Wellbeing

Siblings without rivalry – is it possible?
Sibling conflict is one of the most difficult, distressing and exhausting problems that many parents have to deal with. Yet it is inevitable.

Research tells us that conflict is a major part of normal sibling relationships. Sibling rivalry creates opportunities for children to learn about dealing with conflict – so it’s not all bad. But what causes it?

Experts agree that at the root of sibling jealousy (which often causes rivalry) is each child’s deep desire for the exclusive love of their parents.

From a child’s point of view, the presence of other siblings threatens everything that is essential to their wellbeing. The mere existence of other children in the family often signifies LESS – less one-on-one quality time with parents, less attention for hurts and disappointments, and less approval for successes.

Most frightening of all is the thought: “if Mum and Dad are showing all that love and concern and enthusiasm for my brother/sister, maybe they love them more than me!”

No wonder children struggle so ferociously to be “the best child”. No wonder they use all their energy to have more or most – or ALL! Security lies in having all of mummy and daddy’s attention, all the toys, all the food, all the space…

As parents we can easily become frustrated because we expect our children to always get on well together. Conflict can be exasperating and demand all of our tolerance and patience.

To minimize the rivalry, our challenge as parents is to find a way to reassure each of our children that they are special, safe and loved.

Here are ten ideas to encourage good feelings and reduce conflict between siblings:

  • Make sure that each child gets some quality time alone with you regularly
  • Ensure each child gets some personal space and make sure they have belongings that they don’t have to share
  • Pay attention to the individual needs of each child
  • Be generous with hugs and affection to all of your children
  • Teach children to say how they feel with words, not actions
  • Let each child know what it is about them that you AND their siblings love or admire about them
  • Notice and comment when you see your kids helping each other
  • Work in teams for chores, and try not to assign roles based on gender, position in the family or age
  • Interrupt unkindness
  • Encourage rituals and traditions that foster bonding.

It’s always good to remember that sibling relationships are fluid, changing constantly. There is no way that we, as parents, can dictate a permanent, fixed, close, and loving relationship between our children. At different times of their lives, brothers and sisters can get closer or move apart from each other, and back again.

The challenge - to encourage positive relationships between our children - is sometimes difficult but it is not impossible. Our best approach is to use our wisdom and kindness to remove the usual obstacles to sibling harmony, so that when children are ready to reach out to each other the road is clear.

Knowledge from this article is based on the book “Siblings without Rivalry” by Faber and Mazlish.

Community News

St Anne’s Basketball Club is looking for Year 1 students keen to participate in our Ball Skills program during Term 3 of 2019.

We are a family based club and have 17 teams comprised of mainly current and former St Anne’s students playing in the Hawthorn Basketball Association competition, ranging in age groups from Under 9’s to U21’s.  Games are played on Saturdays at venues throughout Boroondara.

The Ball Skills sessions will run for 8 weeks during Term 3.  The aim of the sessions is for the children to be ready to commence playing in a team in the 2019/2020 Summer Season for SABC which starts in Term 4.  We will run separate sessions for boys and girls.  At this stage it is planned for the sessions for the boys to be on Friday after school from 4.30 to 5.15 at Kew East Primary School, and the sessions for the girls to be on Thursday after school from 5pm to 5.45 at Boroondara Sports Centre.

The sessions will commence in week 2 of Term 3 with the first session for the girls being on Thursday 25th July and for the boys on Friday 26th July. The final sessions will be held on 12th and 13th September.

A small fee will be charged ($90) for the ball skills sessions, which will then be deducted when registration fees are paid for the first time in registering your child to play in a SABC team.

Please register your interest by emailing secretary@stannesbc.com.au or by speaking to Sarah Lethlean (Secretary of SABC) on 0438 364 709, Tom Lynch (Father of Joshua) on 0418 813 773, or Susan Whyte (Mother of Grace) on 0400 105 742.
