DUNKIN’ SNACKIN’ BACONPerfect for meat lovers who snack on-the-go, Dunkin’ Donuts have released a brand new black peppered bacon snack, featuring eight strips of Cherrywood-smoked bacon in a sleeve. The bacon, which also features in their Sweet Black Pepper Bacon Breakfast Sandwich, is smoked with natural Cherrywood, seasoned with a blend of brown sugar and black pepper- the perfect pairing for your coffee break! Global Culinary Director of Innovation, Paul Racicot, reports, "We're excited to offer millions of Americans a delicious new way to run on Dunkin' that perfectly matches the iconic brightness and energy that they know and love from our brand." The bacon snack is now available nationwide across Dunkin' restaurants in the US, retailing at $2.79. 2. PINSA OR PIZZA?Pinsa, quite recent to the U.S. & E.U. pizza scene, has been tasted and tested since ancient Roman times. Derived from the Latin word “pinsere,” meaning “to press down with the finger,” the dough is topped with tomatoes, cheese and toppings and cooked in an oven, similarly to pizza. The crust, however, is lighter and airier, made with different higher protein flours such as wheat, rice and spelt, along with more water and less salt. With a rising time of 48 hours, it is baked in an oven at a much lower temperature than regular pizza and takes longer to cook. With toppings, there are plenty of similarities such as tomatoes and cheese but also some surprises such as anchovies and cured pork. 3. TACO BELL SNACKSThe CEO of Taco Bell has set a challenging target of no less than $20 billion as its sales target for the Yum Brands division. In light of this, Taco Bell is expanding its retail footprint with the introduction of Cheddar Crisps. Keto-friendly, gluten-free and certified vegetarian, these snacks pack about 14 grams of protein per serving and come in three Taco Bell-inspired flavours: Nacho, Mild Sauce, and Fire Sauce. Taco Bell first debuted in the retail snack segment in 2018 and has expanded its offerings since across Kroger, Walmart and CVS stores. This particular range will be available at 7-Eleven and Kroger stores in the US and are soon to be sold on Amazon.com. 4. TWENTY AREAS OF OPPORTUNITYIt is the 11th consecutive year of growth in the restaurant industry showing that consumers are as interested as ever in having their meals cooked for them. The National Restaurant Association’s 2020 State of the Restaurant Industry report identified twenty areas of opportunity to keep restaurants relevant and successful. Locally sourced ingredients, plant-based and more nutritious options are all key menu fixtures that consumers look for. Share sustainability practices and charitable work as consumers are more loyal to brands that acknowledge the environment and communities. Investing in employee initiatives and training programmes is key to maintaining brand standards. 5. DAIRY QUEEN SAUCED & TOSSEDDairy Queen has introduced Sauced and Tossed, their latest limited time offer. The Sweet and Tangy Sesame Chicken Strip Basket features chicken strips tossed in a sweet and tangy sesame glaze and served with crispy fries, Texas toast and a choice of dip. Both subs are available for $3.99 each for a limited time only throughout U.S. locations. 7. CASUAL DINING AWARDS 2020The Casual Dining Awards 2020 took place in London last week. The awards night revealed the top businesses across a number of categories. Azzuri Group were crowned ‘Casual Dining Group of the Year’ for the second year in a row. Wagamama picked up two awards for ‘Restaurant Brand of the Year’ for 51+ sites and the 'Menu Innovation’ award for 20+ sites. As today’s dining world is all about the consumer seeking an experience, the ‘Best Designed Restaurant’ was won by Bill’s for their site in Manchester and ‘Brand Marketing of the Year’ went to Nando’s. 8. DOMINO’S CARRYOUTIn a world of delivery, Domino’s U.S. CEO feels carryout and opening more locations is the preferred strategy going forward to drive profits. Although the delivery market is profitable, the cost to service this channel is higher, due to increased minimum wage and pressure from food delivery aggregators such as UberEats and Grub Hub. To combat this, Domino’s is keen to open more restaurants by expanding its store count to 25,000 locations in 2020 to be closer to more customers. This will create an incentive for customers to pick up their own orders with the aim being to generate greater profits for franchisees. 9. NEW PLANT BASED OFFERINGS Chiquito expanded its vegan offerings for breakfast and their kids’ menu with an option of plant-based sausages and eggs. The meatless sausages are made with seitan or wheat gluten and soya with herbs and spices, while the vegan eggs are a mixture of tofu, coconut milk, onion, red pepper, black turtle beans, butternut squash and chipotle chilli. The kids’ menu includes Banana Blossom Bites, served with oat fraiche, and the Mexican Bean Stew with vegan cheese. Meanwhile, Wendy’s is launching a new cheeseburger called ‘The Plantiful’. The plant-based patty is served with your regular cheeseburger toppings of cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, onions, ketchup and mayo on a toasted bun.
