Jodie Guest, PhD, MPH

Preventive Medicine partners with GaDPH for COVID-19 Response

Another example of our Department working on the front lines of COVID-19 education and clinical care comes from the Division of Preventive Medicine. The Preventive Medicine Residency Program has partnered with the Georgia Department of Public Health for a series of planned rotations for 3 Emory Preventive Medicine Residents to each do 2-month rotations in support of GaDPH’s COVID-19 response activities.  The first of the three physician-residents is slated to work at GaDPH during October-November. The rationale for this set of rotations includes the imperative to bring additional medically-trained human resources to the state’s pandemic response, as well as to provide the Preventive Medicine Residents with service and training experiences that will help form the foundations of their careers going forward to protect communities and to promote health and well-being.

Being of Service

Dr. Jodie Guest leads Emory partnership with Mexican Consulate to provide COVID-19 testing and support for Georgia's highly impacted Latino community.

Fueled by disparities in COVID-19 outcomes in the Latino community, a team of researchers at Emory University has partnered with the Mexican Consulate of Atlanta to test members of the Hispanic community for COVID-19. Led by Dr. Jodie Guest, Associate Program Director of the PA Program and vice chair of Rollins’ department of epidemiology, the partnership tested up to 600 people, including consulate employees, on August 8-9 at the Consulate and at another location in Cumming, GA. The Emory team was joined on-site by Consul General Javier Diaz de Leon. Read more HERE.

Dr. Guest was also a featured panelist on GPB on September 1st, assessing the COVID-19 situation in Georgia. You can listen to the full episode HERE.

All-Around Awesomeness!

Dr. Janelle Holder

Ryan Smith, MD 2020 awarded Keith Ellis Resident Scholarship: Dr. Ryan Smith is a native of Lilburn, Georgia and completed his medical degree at Emory University School of Medicine. Dr. Smith serves as Chief Resident at Emory Family Medicine Residency Program and builds longitudinal relationship with patients by serving as a family medicine physician.

During his time as Chief Resident, Dr. Smith has developed an 18-month curriculum to cover the core topics of family medicine.  He has also sponsored an initiative to improve bedside rounding in the Emory inpatient service.  Throughout his medical career, he has been involved in medical school education.

He applies evidence-based medicine to his daily practice. He thrives on delivering full-spectrum outpatient medicine as well as teaching medical students. He takes an active role in the Family Medicine Interest Group (FMIG) at the school of medicine, where he continues to expose medical students to the specialty of family medicine.

Stress has always been part of healthcare, and it is increased in this pandemic. Part of the stress is time pressure and the need to keep performing optimally in acute situations. This leads to the paradox that methods of stress reduction that require time may in some situation cause stress themselves and be impractical. This workshop will introduce methods to deal with stress in exercises that can be done in minutes.

  • Talk to Your Kids About Race

Parents of all racial backgrounds are often uncomfortable talking to their children about race. There is a common misconception that parents should teach children to be colorblind (i.e., “not see color”) and therefore talking about race may put ideas in children’s heads about promoting racism. However, a colorblind approach can contribute to racist attitudes and behavior, as well as jeopardize the formation of a positive racial identity. Read more HERE.

Emory SOM Voter Registration Drive

With Election Day fast approaching, here's a tool to help you navigate registering to vote and requesting an absentee ballot in the state of GA. With this linked form, you can:

1. Check your voter registration status
2. Apply to register to vote in Georgia
3. Request an Absentee Ballot
4. Provide your email so that we can forward you early voting times and locations once they’re announced (Optional)

The deadline to register to vote in Georgia for the November General Election is on October 5th!

The application process is very easy, even if you do not have a GA Driver’s license. You can submit the paper application with proof of address. You will however need to show photo ID when voting in person, which can be your passport if you don’t have time to get a GA ID by Election Day.

We are aiming for 100% of our residents and faculty across all programs to be registered, preferably here in Georgia. Even if you know for a fact that you are registered, please use this form to confirm your voter registration status, and plan how you’re going to vote. We will be communicating when early voting locations and times are announced, and are working to facilitate the process of requesting an absentee ballot by potentially partnering with Georgia Equality. The form is completely anonymous and does not collect google account identifications.
