Friday Care Package: Notes on the latest in design and culture for our friends. No Images? Click here It's Friday, April 6 and it's snowing in Boston. So let's find a cozy chair and ponder the universe and stuff; or maybe immerse ourselves in an exciting, twisted, completely-other world; cook a warm dish? Or forget the cold and wind and just chill on a mini-golf course with hipsterously addictive Superorganism crooning Something for Your M.I.N.D. ListeningGuess what has an expiration date of a googol years? No matter what you guessed, you're right! In a surprisingly upbeat Inquiring Minds podcast interview with Sean Carroll—The Big Picture: On the Origins of Life, Meaning, and the Universe Itself—the title pretty much says it all, and the conversation moves right along. One minute it's a discussion of the first creature to crawl up on land, look around and think, "hmm, this looks tricky, I'd better develop a consciousness," and the next it's on to the final lights-out. All covered in barely a tick of the cosmic timeclock. WatchingWhat do Downton Abbey and Marvel Comics have in common? Dan Stevens! And that's the only thing. Legion is a series based, yes, on a Marvel premise, but it's definitely not the Incredible Hulk. It's a mind-bending, high-suspense trip through physical and psychological weirdness. There are actual, thoughtful characters. And stuff gettin' blowed up. And dance numbers. All with visual and aural spectacularness that would please David Lynch. ReadingIf you really want to forget the snow, and pretty much everything else in the normal world, Haruki Murakami's The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle will do the trick. Set in a Japanese suburb, where Okada lives with his wife and cat—until the cat disappears—this story winds around situations, events and characters with increasing mystery and unpredictable weirdness. The blithe, beautiful storytelling makes this a hugely satisfying read. UsingMaldon Sea Salt Flakes. Salt? Oh yes, if you eat food, you need to know about this (or if you already know, you know). It's from the east of England, and it's flaky with a pyramidal shape that feels great between the fingers as you pinch it in. The less bitter, "bursty" flavor is phenomenal, and just as you notice the taste it dissolves like magical melting deliciousness.
