Under the porchlight—coming on earlier now—the season's fever breaks with a passing whiff of autumn, like cool woodsmoke, setting off a wistful review of all the things we meant to do, and haven't done. But hold on... is that it? It's warm, even icky-hot, halfway through October at least, and who the heck is the educational-industrial complex to tell us when it's over? Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?* Hell no! It's not over until we say it's over! So there's only one thing to do: Road Trip! Start your mix tape with Interstate Love Song. ListeningNeed someone to bring along on your epic summer road trip? Try the Beef and Dairy Network Podcast's episode featuring Beef Encounters, the dating app for British beef people. Featuring a success story: a Milk Maid and a Bovine Arse Vet who met on the app, this inspiring tell-all is uplifting in its frank discussion of beef, bovine disease, the ups and downs of milking, cow's arses and the deep sympathy and understanding that soulmates who are truly in love share. WatchingThe Blues Brothers is more than a road trip movie of course. It's a cultural landmark, a cinema touchstone for a generation, 148 minutes of sublimely hilarious play between two gifted comedians who riff off of each other like jazz (or blues) musicians, an insane car chase with the record for most police cars crashed in a movie. You've seen it. See it again, because, Aretha. ReadingMaps, on paper. Have you tried this? If you say, "no thank you" to the nice lady on your phone and pick up a map at the tourist information center, you'll be opening yourself up to the unknown, leaving your fate in the laps of the gods. It may be overwhelming at first; you'll see the whole city, or state, or country, and there won't be a little red triangle moving along to show you where you are. You are not shown on the map! The wonderful thing about it is that without the nice lady telling you to turn right at Gladiola Street, you can blow right by, and turn left at Magnolia Drive. What's on Magnolia Drive? Only one way to find out. And since this is an epic summer road trip, maybe even "fold" the map back up (nobody can actually do this, so it always ends up as kind of a wad, which is part of the fun) and follow the road 'til it runs out. Could make a good story to tell when you're back at your desk. No one will believe it though.RecommendingKombucha. Watch out! This stuff may be not-that-tasty the first time (though the bubbles are nice); pretty OK the second time; but whammo, the third time it is phenomenal. If you've ever spent hours working under a furious, driving sun, sweating until you couldn't bend your arms, then been handed a cool, fizzy, "gosh-I-just-luv-ya" drink, yea, it's like that. Some people say it's a probiotic panacea, some say it's a bubbly bamboozle. Dunno. Go for three and see if you don't feel like Popeye. OversharingBecause I'm Me: "I just want to know what's wrong with me..." Go All the Way: “Would it be OK if we could just slip away?”
