Click here Cairns Regional Council e-news - Volume 28, 24 August 2017Cairns Festival fires up this weekendYes, it's that time of year when Cairns puts on its biggest annual celebration of life in our tropical paradise. Cairns Festival kicks off tomorrow (Friday 25 August) for 10 days of celebration, colour, music and fun. It all starts with Festival Friday, which includes the Busk at Dusk world record busking attempt. Saturday's Grand Parade will star local organisations, businesses and schools as it travels along the Cairns Esplanade from 5.30pm. Can't be there to see it in person? Watch it live on the Cairns Festival Facebook page. The parade is followed by fireworks at 7.30pm. A full program of events will continue throughout the week, culminating with the massive Carnival on Collins on Fathers Day. Welcoming babiesThe annual Cairns region Baby Welcome ceremony will be held on Saturday 28 October. Babies born between 1 October 2016 and 30 September 2017 will be formally welcomed into the Cairns community. Register your baby online for this special commemorative event.
Inclusive events for Disability Action WeekCairns celebrates Disability Action Week from Sunday 10 to Saturday 16 September. This year’s theme, Everybody has a role to play, encourages us all to make small changes to create a more welcoming place for people with disability. Activities include Run and roll inclusive tennis, Beats on the 'Nard and an inclusive golf day. Check out Council's What's On Calendar for upcoming events. Seeking sustainable housesDo you have a property that you have worked hard to make more sustainable and which you would like to showcase as part of National Sustainable House Day? Cairns Regional Council is helping promote nationwide Sustainable House Day. On 17 September, houses around Australia will open their doors to share knowledge and information with others on how to live more sustainably at home to enjoy a better lifestyle and save money on energy costs. Homes should have at least four sustainable features. For more information on displaying your home, email sustainability@cairns.qld.gov.au. Swap seeds at StratfordStratford Library hosts monthly Seed Swaps as part of a new Seed Library program to encourage interest in gardening and growing fresh food. Seed Swaps will be held on the fourth Wednesday of each month from 3pm to 4pm. Small packets of seeds are available free of charge to take home and grow. Gordonvale gets new-look libraryGordonvale Library re-opened earlier this month, following a dramatic refurbishment of the Norman Street building. Division 1 Councillor Brett Moller joined with long-time residents Jeanette Townson and Carmel Bryce to cut the cake at the official opening. Among the improvements are new carpet and ceilings, accessibility features, a technology bench for using an charging laptops and other devices, additional computers, photographic wallpaper, and a new meeting room complete with teleconference facilities that is available for public hire. The exterior of the building has been rendered and landscaping added. Gordonvale Library is open 10am-6pm Monday to Friday and 9am-noon on Saturdays. Free community wi-fi is available at the library.
