Comprising around 100 performances, activities and exhibitions at five local venues, Festival 2018 celebrates the Commonwealth Games and Cairns’ role as an Event City. From live music every night, to interactive workshops, art exhibitions and theatre performances, the festival offers entertainment for all the family. Children's activities include The Young Company's Hero Street action adventure game, and "Spart" workshops where sport meets art and participants can take away some inventive ideas to last the school holidays. Plan your Festival 2018 outings by viewing the full program on Council's website.
Live Site to combine music and sportThe Cairns Esplanade Live Site will operate every day of the Commonwealth Games from 10am to 10pm. The Live Site will feature big screens to watch all the Commonwealth Games sporting action on the eastern side of the lagoon, a main stage for live music acts on the western lawn, and an array of workshops, activities and roving entertainers throughout. There will be live music every night of the festival, including Amy Shark on Thursday 5 April, and The Cat Empire rounding out the 12-day festival on Sunday 15 April. The GC2018 Commonwealth Opening Ceremony will be broadcast via the big screens on 4 April, amid an evening of live music and fireworks to kick off Festival 2018. Cairns Esplanade closed to trafficThe Cairns Esplanade road will be closed to all traffic between Aplin Street and Shields Street from 4am on Tuesday 3 April. The road will remain closed for the duration of the festival to create a pedestrian-friendly dining and entertainment precinct. Plan to allow free camping at Green PatchA Gordonvale recreation area that has long been used as an informal camping ground will be revamped to allow overnight stays to be legally permitted. Greenpatch, on the banks of the Mulgrave River, is currently under the ownership and management of the Queensland Government. Cairns Regional Council has started a process to acquire trusteeship of the site, with the aim of creating a formalised free short-term camping area that would contribute to the economic development of Gordonvale. Under a master plan released last week, extensive areas would be identified for tent and car camping, with three drive-through campervan parking spaces suitable for larger vehicles. A new amenities block would be installed to provide shower facilities and picnic shelters, footpaths and wayfinding signage would be added. The Greenpatch master plan can now be viewed on Council’s website. Feedback can be provided via the Have Your Say tab. |
