Musical education at QSID is alive and well. At all levels they are learning the language of music and playing and performing using voices and instruments.
All the younger classes are busy preparing for the Spring Program. The students are singing, acting and moving to music. Some will also play on the Boomwhackers, some tap using rhythm sticks, and some will play the recorders. There will even be a mini-opera presentation. When they aren’t busy working on performance preparation, they all are working on counting note value correctly.
A focus of the 9, 10, and 11 year old classes is listening and understanding similar musical elements throughout various
genres and history. We have had interesting conversations about classical organ music, modern electronic music, and even music of North Africa. Another focus is preparing for the spring program, learning the music and rhythms for our performance.
The 12/13-year-old class put together complex rhythms that they learned and performed in small groups. They used the “Line Rider” program to create a video that musically accompanies a piece of music of their choosing. They have also begun thinking about what goes into a musical composition and each student will try to create one using Garageband.
The secondary students continue to practice reading music and playing on pianos or guitars. They have also considered the
emotion and impact of music in our lives and are creating a video presentation to demonstrate this.
