Today in NZ history...

1939 — New Zealand declares war on Germany  Alongside Britain and Australia, New Zealand was one of the first countries to become involved in the global conflict precipitated by Germany's invasion of Poland on 1 September.

2000 — First open-heart surgery in NZ  Pioneering heart surgeon Brian Barratt-Boyes performed the surgery using a heart-lung bypass machine. The procedure, at Greenlane Hospital in Auckland, was carried out on an 11-year-old girl with a hole in her heart.

Our clubs

With some 40 clubs in our Centre, Auckland Bowls has a number of clubs established before 1900.  Here's one such club - Auckland Bowling Club.

Laid in 1861, greens are believed to be the oldest in the Southern Hemisphere.  The process of converting swampland to bowling green required transporting in enormous quantities of stone to lay the foundations, making the green a very expensive undertaking at the time, costing 1,700 pounds by the time the initial set up was completed in 1862.  Read more here...

Keeping busy

Here's a way to get some practice in and get some exercise at the same time - check out our Bowls Basics Series.

We have a series of seven short videos for new and experienced bowlers to use to help develop your bowls game. Each video will focus on an element of playing, from selecting the perfect size bowl for you to a range of shots you may play during a game.

Here are two that may whet your appetite, or simply visit our website to view our other videos.

Definition of...
spring

A much over-rated season, good for daffodils, tulips, freesias, and the planting of lettuce and tomatoes, but not much else.

The weather is too unreliable, too quixotic, too windy, but in areas laughably called temperate, there is one compensation - it is the start of the bowling season!
