Valentine’s Day Gifts That Won’t Hurt Your Waistline

You can’t walk into a store after the first of the year without seeing shelves full of delectable chocolates and candies that say “Be My Valentine.” While it’s great to want to share your feelings with those you love, adding to their waistline isn’t exactly a great way to show your sweetheart that you care. It’s like saying, “I love you, but I want to make sure you don’t live a long and healthy life.” It just doesn’t make sense.

This Valentine’s Day, take a different approach. Choose a gift that truly shows the special people in your life that you want them to be around for as long as possible. Give them something that encourages their health, rather than takes it away. Don’t know what to get? That’s okay because we have lots of ideas for you.

Coaches Corner: What Are Healthy Foods - REALLY?

This month we're starting a Coaches Corner where you'll hear from one of our coaches each month. We thought you'd like to get to know them a bit and we definitely know they have volumes of insight and great advice to offer!

It’s true what they say: It All Starts At Home

In my own home, I try to focus on whole, fresh fo ods. Does this mean that there are no processed or packaged foods in my cupboard? No, not at all!

Four people in the house, with four different schedules, means that I have to have some flexibility in the foods that I buy. I focus on fresh foods first then add some frozen foods and a few packaged foods (typically snack type foods) that are free from nasty chemicals and preservatives.

It’s interesting that, after a period of time, the foods choices presented at home started to change the way my family looked at, and chose, the foods they eat when away from home. I see them all making healthier eating decisions on their own.

So, where to start?

1st choice: FRESH FOODS = whole & unprocessed: A great place to start, when shopping for whole unprocessed foods, is the outer perimeter of your grocery store. There you will find fresh fruits, vegetables, meat and dairy.

2nd choice: FROZEN FOODS = minimally processed: While fresh foods are the best choice, they may not always be suited to your needs. When selecting frozen foods, take a minute to read the ingredients. If there is more than one ingredient put it back in the freezer and try a different brand. It’s always best to select frozen foods that are unseasoned and aren’t precooked.

3rd choice: CANNED FOODS = moderately to highly processed: Canned foods are cooked during processing, so they aren’t as desirable as fresh or even frozen. As with frozen foods, read the ingredients label. Try to avoid unnecessary and excessive ingredients.

My basic guidelines when buying food:
Fresh as much as possible.
ALWAYS read the ingredients.
If I can’t pronounce it (or don’t know what it is), I don’t want to eat it.
I take a pass on products with labels that proclaim Low-fat, Heart Healthy, Low Calorie, Typically, these foods are loaded with added sugar and starch and chemicals used to make them taste good. Just say no!

SUCCESS: Kaitlyn
For newlywed, Kaitlyn, the first year of marital bliss also came with an extra 30 pounds, simply from more wine, eating out, and skipping the gym more than usual. When she heard about the HCG diet from friends, and saw how well and how fast it worked, she had to try it!

After much research, she found ThinNow/MyHCGPlus and dropped the first 20 pounds in just 21 days on VLCD. The second 12 she lost midway through her second round when she quite literally ran out of excess fat and the diet stopped working like it’s designed to!

Kaitlyn now enjoys a life of making healthy food choices, caring for her toddler, and feeling great about her body and her health.
