National Apprenticeship Week 2021

RK's electrical apprentice and former paratrooper Michael Parr shared his story in a bid to encourage others to up-skill and retrain during National Apprenticeship Week 2021 (8th - 14th February).

Michael, who was forced to quit the army due to health reasons says becoming an apprentice electrician was the best thing he could have done to turn his life around.

The 28-year-old from Great Glen, Leicestershire was discharged from the 3rd Battalion Parachute Regiment after suffering hearing loss in one ear as a result of firing heavy weapons.

Since becoming an apprentice at RK Electrical Mechanical Services in Northamptonshire he has his feet firmly on the ground and hopes to encourage others to consider apprenticeships when faced with having to make a career change.

As a specialist in electrical, plumbing and heating services, RK Electrical Mechanical Services are experts when it comes to ensuring the safety of tenants.

New electrical safety regulations for landlords came into force in June last year. They apply to new tenancies from 1 July 2020 and existing tenancies from 1 April 2021.

With more than 300 Electrical Installation Condition Reports (EICRs) completed last year alone for clients in the social housing industry, RK are familiar with the requirements to ensure that all your electrical safety standards are met as well as completing investigative or remedial work if the report requires this.

Kye Bishop, Business Development Manager, said: “New regulations require landlords to have the electrical installations in any properties they own inspected at least every five years and tested by a person who is qualified and competent. That’s where we come in.

“Our commitment to providing highly-trained staff to carry out an exemplary service means we can come on board to manage your legal electrical safety requirements so you don’t have to.”

RK Business Development Manager, Kye Bishop explains how changing his career path and taking a ‘leap of faith’ was a decision well made:

Having joined RK in January 2018, I have really enjoyed seeing and being part of the business which has steadily grown over the last few years. Coming from a management background in the leisure industry I was initially mindful about taking a ‘leap of faith’ and completely changing my career path, however I’m a massive believer in the phrase “don’t regret the things you’ve done, regret the things you haven’t done” and I felt like I would’ve always been curious about the construction industry if I didn’t dip my toe so to speak.

It’s a decision I’m glad I made! Nearly three years on and it’s been a pleasure, as well as hard work, to be part of a forward-thinking and ambitious company which prides itself on offering quality solutions across the electrical and mechanical sectors.

My role within the business covers a variety of areas, including staffing, recruitment, training, health and safety, marketing, lead generation and customer relations and it is something I’m looking forward to being a part of for many years to come in order to watch the business continue to grow and further establish itself as one of the leading construction contractors in the area and beyond.
