Our kids need a computer

We had such success after making a call-out in our Autumn newsletter for a secondhand ipad (thank you, Sofia Kouznetsova) that we're on the ask again. This time, we're after a reasonably up-to-date computer to help our child advocates run programs for the children at Starick House refuge. If you think you have something that might fit the bill, please call Jane on 9478 5300 or email marketing@starick.org.au

Wanted: your old shopping bags

Do you have a stash of reusable or even old plastic supermarket shopping bags? If so, the Starick Op Shop would love to give them a new home. Please drop them off at 9 Love Street, Cloverdale Mon-Fri 10-3 or Sat 9-1.

Starick recently hosted an event at the end of the last leg of Ride Against Domestic Violence 2018 - that's Starick Chair Wendy Wiley surrounded by riders on the steps of Parliament House (left). Starick receives a proportion of the funds raised, as do seven other worthwhile services. Our thanks to the riders for their contribution to raising funds and community awareness.

Raising funds through a swapmeet stall and donations, staff members Kerri Babbington and Jill Dewar recently gave Starick clients a very special day of pampering. After a gentle yin yoga session and meditation, clients were treated to a mini massage and each received a beautiful bag of Avon products. A big call-out to Kerri, Jill and the team of volunteers who made this day possible - including two ex-Starick clients, who prepared a delicious Mexican-themed lunch.

Essentials Kits Donated

The CWA Baldivis Belles show donors a shopping list of homeware essentials - brooms, ironing boards, bins, etc. - and ask them to purchase something for women who are starting over. In July, the Belles visited Mary Smith refuge (right) to deliver $1500 worth of these highly useful kits - including, of course, CWA cookbooks - for the women we support. Watch out for the Belles and their shopping lists outside a KMart or Bunnings near you.

The Nappy Collective

Have you heard of The Nappy Collective? Twice a year, volunteers from this marvellous organisation collect your leftover unused disposable nappies and redistribute them to organisations that support families in crisis or need.

Starick's two refuges recently benefitted from the May collection run, and there's another one due in October.

Rotary clubs around Perth do a fantastic job of supporting charities and other not-for-profit organisations like us, and we greatly value our relationships with these hard-working community champions. A big thank you to the Rotary Club of Southern Districts, whose members recently donated $750 towards clothing and school uniforms for the children in our refuges.

Starick team members (from left) Karen, Tse, Carrie and Nicole looked the part this June as part of an official attempt to get the "Largest Gathering of Angels" into the Guinness Book of Records. The event was hosted by WA’s own world-renowned trauma recovery advocate, Dr Ann O’Neill who, after the murder of her two young children, formed Angelhands Inc to provide services to people on their journey to recovery from extreme trauma.
