Chinese New Year marks the transition between zodiac signs - 2021 is the year of the Ox while 2020 was the year of the Rat. In Chinese culture, the Ox is a valued animal because of its role in agriculture, positive characteristics, such as being hardworking and honest, are attributed to it.

In the past bowls had a very strict dress code, especially for women. The starched white dresses had to be a specific length. Some players rebelled against the code and wore brighter colours or floppy hats. The dress code became more relaxed over time, partly to attract more people to the sport.

Definition of a Bowler...
A creature who tires easily at home. Particularly weakened by the sight of a vacuum cleaner, rake, broom, or paintbrush, but who amazingly enough, can put 10 hours on a bowling green without any sign of fatigue! Source: The Lawn Bowls Dictionary

A sense of style at fundraiserDate: 4 February 2021 It was such a terrific sight at Mt Eden Bowls last week, as Donaldson Brown Insurance Brokers rolled out their fifth annual fundraiser in support of the Children’s Cancer Foundation. What these 200 plus novices albeit, keen, bowlers lacked in rolling skills, they sure made up for it with their sense of style with an all-white dress code, lots of fun and laughter
and extraordinary generosity for such a great cause.
Aotearoa National Bowls 2021Date: 7–8 February 2021
Tāmaki Makaurau had blue skies and hot temperatures for last weekend's Aotearoa National Bowls. The visiting and local teams bought their skills, their team spirit, colourful shirts and a sense of humour and fun - a great formula for a successful event! There are a bunch of people who worked tirelessly behind the scenes who should take a bow and be congratulated for their contribution - to the host clubs, the officials, the army of club volunteers, the organising team and not forgetting Otahuhu Railway and Onehunga District who were so instrumental in their fundraising efforts. Kia ora - thank you for making everyone's
experience such a great one!

Sundowner at KohiDate: 12 February 2021 Kohi is loving Twilight 3FIVE on their social calendar this year. What is catching people's interest is the format - it's not a weekly commitment, they have different matchups every week, it is fast, fun, has a strategic format, it builds confidence... and bowlers at all levels are joining in. Better still Kohi is finding it's a great pathway for social bowlers to transition into a more structured competition.
Club eventsOur clubs offer a variety of events that suit every level of bowler. Whether you are a novice, social bowler, a business house fan, or a more experienced player, the clubs have something to suit everyone.

An invite at Tuesday Triples
Frank Booth with the top team: Paul Lau, Mike Rapson and Sidney Chan from Ellerslie Bowls
Date: 9 February 2021 Kohi hosted many friends from across Auckland at their Open Tuesday Triples. A beautiful yet challenging breeze tested the bowlers, particularly as the forecasted rain loomed to spoil the evening. Frank Booth, with event sponsor Summerset Retirement Villages, addressed the crowd with an update on what is happening in the neighbourhood with its project in St Johns. He extended an invitation to all to visit and fall in love with the Heritage Apartments at Ellerslie at a special event taking place on Sunday
14 February.
