When it rains, it pours! An update from Tony: Frank and I made a tour of Excelsior Springs GC on a hot, muggy June day. Where May was relatively cool and wet, June has turned off like the worst of August! This critical timeframe in the season is often referred to as the beginning of the 120-day war. June through the majority of September usually spell heat, humidity, fungal disease pressure, timely and untimely rain events. It is that time of year where we just try to hang on, beat back turf decline and do all in our power to do all the right things to keep conditions the best that mother nature allows. Mother nature dealt Frank and his staff a pretty severe first blow. Late Friday afternoon, June 11th, a severe thunderstorm swept through with a full-field event out on the course. Strong winds, lightning and torrential rains cut a destructive swath through Excelsior Springs and caused major damage and destruction to many mature trees on the golf course. We were very fortunate not to have sustained injuries to golfers caught on the course and most structures came out unscathed. The extent of damage and debris to trees caused a closure of the course. Staff worked tirelessly late into the night and again the next morning in order to get the course playable for a scheduled event on Saturday. Kudos to all staff, including pro shop personnel, for pitching in and getting that event out on schedule! By the time I arrived on Tuesday, staff had cleaned and cleared what they could in order to make the course playable. This clean up will be ongoing for weeks and months to come. Unfortunately, we lost some very integral specimen trees and have many high hanging branches to contend with. An exact count of downed trees is yet to be determined, but it is extensive. A storm like this could not have been less timely when considering the 120-day war has just begun. Other Projects: Staff was able to get all of the green’s fans serviced and re-installed for the summer season. These fans are crucial to the health and vigor of historically problematic greens at ES. Enhancing air movement to greens that are tucked and protected is critical to their performance during the stressful summer months. Staff was also able to get new piping installed for the target areas on the driving range. The addition of this irrigation will certainly enhance these important practice areas. Even with all of the devastation, the course looks great going into the heat of the season. Greens were full and appeared very healthy. Franks has completed all pre-emergent herbicide applications and is up on all preventative fungicide applications. All green-side fans have been placed New irrigation lines going in on range for Wee Links Project Thank you to everyone who played in our June Couples Night! 1st Low- Norm & Anita Hemmerling 2nd Low- Tim & Debbie Jarman 1st High- Doss Couple 2nd High- Tie Neil & Joyce Vanhoosier/Craig & Rhonda Boustead Most alike- Justin Gonzalez & Rachael Pannel Leagues Check out the Handicap League season standings HERE Shout out to Ryan Fluesmeier for going undefeated in regular season play!
