1. Three new cases of ASF identified in Germany in wild boar

Three new cases of African Swine Fever in Germany’s eastern Brandenburg region brings the total number of confirmed cases to 94 since 10 September.

2. Salmonella risk in eggs

A warning has been issued by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) about eggs that could be contaminated with Salmonella.

3. Drop in antibiotic sales in Europe

Reports relating to the sale of antibiotics for livestock in Europe show there has been a reduction of over a third in antimicrobial usage in farm animals between 2011 and 2018.

4. Ban on plant-free ‘sausages’ and ‘burgers’ rejected by MEPs

Proposals have been denied to retain meat related names for products containing meat, such as sausages and burgers. This comes as restrictions on dairy products get tighter.

5. Two new E. coli outbreaks with genetic links to past Romaine

Two new outbreaks of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli O157: H7 (STEC) illnesses that have genetic links to past outbreaks are being investigated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Centers for Disease Control, and Prevention (CDC).

6. Study reveals high levels of adulteration in sage

A study has emphasised that the global herb supply chains are at risk to food fraud. This follows a study carried out found that over a quarter of popular herbs sampled in the UK were adulterated.

7. Rules for sesame seeds from India tightened in the EU

Due to continued recalls of pesticide residue contamination, the European Commission has tightened checks on sesame seeds from India.

8. Will antibiotics be replaced by probiotics in US chickens?

To promote healthy animals, phytochemical and probiotic use in poultry are being trialled in the US in place of antibiotics.

9. Food safety focus included in hospital review

Following a fatal Listeria outbreak in the UK, the plans to improve food safety are included in a review into hospital food. This was instructed in 2019 by Health and Social Care Secretary Matt Hancock.

10. Two large outbreaks hit Austria in 2019

Two foodborne outbreaks in Austria in the last year have involved more than 300 people; with under 50 being reported in total.

11. Salmonella the top offender involving INFOSAN

The International Food Safety Authorities Network (INFOSAN) was involved in 37 incidents in quarter 3 compared to 29 events in quarter 2 2020; Salmonella dominated these incidents.
