Welcome to Issue 14 of Habitat 2014

Census Date for Semester 2

Sunday 31 August is the last date to withdraw from standard Semester 2 subjects, take a leave of absence or withdraw from your course without incurring liability for fees and a ‘withdrawn’ grade on your academic record.

Students are advised to finalise their enrolment on Friday 29 August, while student centres and 13 MELB are available to assist if required.

For a 'how to' guide to withdrawing from subjects, click here.

International students

International students on student visas are expected to complete their course by the course end date on their Confirmation of Enrolment (COE). Usually this means a standard load of 50 points per semester.

International students can only reduce their load in limited circumstances and an application is required. Further information is available from International Student Services.

Local students

Local students do not need to apply to reduce their study load. Please note that dropping your study load to part-time study may affect Centrelink or scholarship benefits and eligibility for public transport concession fares.

Withdrawing from a subject may impact your progression in and duration of your course. Use the Handbook to check whether the subject you are considering withdrawing from is a prerequisite for subjects you intend to take in future. You can make an appointment with a student adviser if you would like to discuss your course plan.

Venue: Seminar room 1, Old Metallurgy (Building 166)
RSVP: Email MSSI

MSSI presents a free public lecture by Professor Graeme Davison, Emeritus Professor of History at Monash University.

In this talk Graeme will delineate the historical origins of the 'suburban nation' and the reasons for its tenacious hold on the Australian imagination. Thinking critically about the future of Australia's cities requires us to excavate the ideological origins of this powerful strand in our culture. Anti-suburbanism, he argues, shared many of the assumptions of the suburban idea itself.

Confronting the environmental challenges of the twenty-first century may require us to abandon the determinism underlying both the suburban idea and the thinking of its enemies.
