So, it's April. For most people, that's springtime. For NHS circles - especially in financial terms, it's the start of the yearly cycle. For us within the NHS England Diabetes team, it's a fresh time for planning as well as ensuring some of last year's good stories continue down the line.

One in six people with diabetes are discriminated against at work because of their condition, a survey by Diabetes UK has found.

More than one third (37 per cent) of respondents said that living with diabetes had caused them difficulty at work, while seven per cent had not told their employer that they have the condition. To read more, click here. 

Registration for the UK’s leading conference for healthcare professionals has been opened.

The 2017 Diabetes Professional Care Conference (DPC) attracted a record 3,235 delegates in November and now people can secure their place at this year’s event. It will take place at Olympia in London on November 14 and 15. To read more, click here. 

A tax on fizzy drinks has now come into force in a bid to prevent obesity and type 2 diabetes.

People who rely on energy drinks to treat hypos are being urged to check labels to ensure the carbohydrates have not dropped in response to the levy, with Lucozade already halving its sugar content. To read more, click here.

The risk of gestational diabetes can be reduced by 21 per cent through exercise, a US study has found.

Researchers from the University of Iowa made the conclusion after analysing data from 1,333 women from 1985 to 2011, who enrolled in a National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute study called Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA). To read more, click here.

Admissions to NHS hospitals where obesity was recorded as either a primary or secondary diagnosis increased by 18 per cent within a year, according to new figures.

There were 617,000 admissions in 2016/17 compared to 525,000 during 2015/16, NHS Digital has said. Of the latest figures, 10,705 admissions had obesity recorded as the main cause, an increase on 9,929 admissions in 2015/16. To read more, click here. 

Primary care healthcare professionals and staff are gearing up to take part in Diabetes Prevention Week which kicks off next week.

The campaign has been developed to raise awareness of the Healthier You: NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme (NDPP), increase programme referrals and encourage members of the public to be more aware of the symptoms of type 2 diabetes.
