New Beginnings: Alumni receive Fulbright grants to teach or conduct research abroad; New GSBF cohort commencesI love April because many new exciting things begin! We have begun teaching the new cohort of eighteen Global Social Benefit Fellows! Fourteen of these will be working in Africa this summer, in Ghana, Rwanda, Uganda, and Zambia. We will be working with nine social enterprises, eight of them alumni graduating from the Global Social Benefit Institute® (GSBI) Accelerator in 2016 and 2017. Please come meet the new fellows at the Research With a Mission Open House and Expo on Wednesday, May 23, 2:30-4:30 pm, in Locatelli Center. CocoAsenso: Reflections from Launching a Social Enterprise in the PhilippinesMore than 15 million Filipinos farm coconuts for a living, yet 9 million of them still live in poverty. Wanting to address this gap within the industry, SCU alum Thomas Wheeler founded CocoAsenso. By helping coconut farmers gain access to higher-value markets and providing them the opportunity for part-time employment in municipal-level processing factories, CocoAsenso helps increase farmers' income by as much as 85%. Folia Water’s paper filter technology aims to provide clean water to billions of low-income users at the cost of less than a penny a day. Wish them luck as they undergo the final round! FRUIT OF THE VINE | Rebecca (Mason) Kaduru '09, co-founder of KadAfrica, is the first SCU grad to participate in Miller Center’s Global Social Benefit Institute (GSBI®). Through selling passionfruit, KadAfrica teaches young Ugandan girls investment strategies and empowers women to protect what they earn. Rebecca, along with her husband and co-founder, traveled back to Santa Clara’s campus to attend the 2017 GSBI In-Residence accelerator with some exciting next goals in mind. INTRODUCTION TO HUMAN-CENTERED DESIGN: IDEO.org is offering free lessons on human-centered design for social innovation. This 9-week hands-on learning experience will equip users with the needed knowledge and skills to be able to apply IDEO’s creative approach to challenges across industries and fields.
