The Brief »

Following the energy and insights from the DataSci+AI Forum, it’s clear that momentum around AI at the University of Pittsburgh is only growing. HAIL is continuing to expand its role as a connector, bringing together faculty, students, and partners across research, education, and real-world applications to shape what responsible AI looks like in practice. One example is the launch of new interdisciplinary efforts, such as the HAIL Graduate Student Awardee Program, in which students from across fields come together to explore responsible data science and AI through collaborative discovery, guest speakers and readings, and a shared white paper.

At the same time, conversations about AI are increasingly tied to questions of when—and when not—it should be used responsibly, alongside a growing desire for agency in how these tools shape our work and learning. We’re excited to continue shaping what comes next with you by building a more coordinated, university-wide approach to AI, particularly centering on leadership, learning, and real-world practice.

In future newsletters, this section will feature contributions from members of our community, offering their perspective on the most pressing challenges and opportunities in advancing responsible AI and data science.
