We have put together a calendar of what we hope are relevant trade shows and culinary events taking place this year. We want you to be in the know and hope to create even more opportunities for idea sharing, whether we’re hosting ideation sessions, trend briefings, kitchen workshops, our unique 'meat universities' or food safaris. Together, we can make an impact in the year ahead. 2. HAP-PEA AT PIZZA HUTIn the midst of Veganuary, Pizza Hut Restaurants are putting a plant-based spin to the much-loved classic pepperoni pizza. The meat free ‘Pepperphoni’ pizza has just been launched across its UK outlets and is made from pea protein and dairy free cheese. The new vegan pizza, with prices starting at £11.69, is a limited time offer at dine-in Huts but has the possibility of joining the permanent menu offerings if they are proven popular among customers. 3. NEWEST SUBWAY BITESSubway launched a meat free version of their classic Meatball Marinara in the beginning of January in the UK and Ireland. The new sub is filled with meat free meatballs and slices of melted vegan cheese. Subway’s latest TV commercial shows meat-free consumers taste testing the new Meatless Meatball Marinara. Another new menu item is the Toasted Bites, made for easy snacking. Each Toasted Bite comes in a three-inch, square ciabatta bread roll, available for £1.29 each. Customers have one of four options: Ham & Cheese, Tuna Melt, Steak & Cheese or Cheese and Veggies. 4. YUM’S LATEST MOVEHabit Burger Grill which boasts nearly 300 locations across the US and China is set to join Taco Bell, Pizza Hut and KFC as part of fast-food giant, Yum Brands Inc. Yum announced in early January its plans to acquire Habit Restaurants Inc. as part of a $375-million deal. Habit Burger represents a new positioning for Yum: fast-casual. The niche format is higher cost than McDonald’s and Burger King, offers a drive-through facility and self-service kiosks, and currently competes with the likes of Shake Shack and Five Guys. 5. WHO’S EATING OUT?Households’ share of spending on restaurants and takeaways has risen nearly 3% over the 10 years from 2008 to 2018. Eurostat released findings on household spending on eating out over the 10-year period amongst all EU countries. Ireland was found to spend the most on eating out, spending over 14% in restaurants, takeaways and cafes which is more than double the EU average. Spain and Malta are the second and third highest spenders on dining out whilst Romania and Poland spend the least with under 3% going towards foodservice outlets. See where other countries rank in household expenditure on eating out from the button below. 6. DOMINO’S MENU UPDATESDomino’s Netherlands have added a new Hot Sandwich featuring pepperoni, sausage, red onion, BBQ sauce and swiss cheese. In addition, three new meat free pizzas were added to their menu topped with their new veggie chicken or veggie shawarma. The Veggie Pesto Pollo pizza includes the ‘veggie chicken’, tomatoes, mozzarella, red onion and pesto while the Veggie Tropicana pizza has the ‘veggie chicken’ along with paprika, jalapenos and pineapple. The Veggie Shawarma pizza is topped with the ‘veggie shawarma’, mozzarella and a swirl of garlic sauce. 7. AN ALDI CHRISTMAS RECORDAldi saw sales growth throughout the festive period with its revenues in the period leading up to December 24th hitting £1 billion for the first time. The chain’s sales have risen nearly 8% year-on-year, led by strong demand for its premium ‘Specially Selected’ food range and fresh meat in both parts. In the build up to Christmas, the store sold 22 million pigs in blankets, 55 million mince pies and more than 2 million Christmas puddings. The company is on track with their goal of opening 1,200 stores by 2025 with 874 stores currently operating in the UK. 8. LUNCH IN THE WORKPLACECarrefour has a new alliance with Dejbox, a lunch delivery innovator for France’s business sector. Dejbox is an online canteen where employees can select their lunch from a range of fresh, cooked dishes priced around €6-9 and have it delivered to their workplace for free. The deal enhances Carrefour’s e-grocery offerings to incorporate a new product section with ready-to-eat meals and allows them to reach a new customer base through businesses to employees. 9. YO! KIOSK IN ASDA A selection of Asda locations will be introducing Yo! manned kiosks come February. Yo! offers made-to-order sushi and ready meals such as chicken katsu curry and salmon teriyaki. The brand recently rolled out 50 kiosks in Tesco stores at the end of last year. Since grocery stores have a higher footfall compared to restaurants, it is becoming more common for brands to expand their offerings in different formats to reach consumers. The new alliances benefit retailers as well since they are able to offer both premium products and convenience to their customers.
