WELCOME TO ISSUE [76] OF FABRICATE

Dear staff,

Fabricate is the official student newsletter at the Melbourne School of Design. You are receiving this email as a current student or staff member of the Faculty of Architecture Building and Planning. The cover image is of the floor plan of the Baker House, designed by celebrated Australian architect Robin Boyd. Robin, part of the illustrious artistic Boyd family was a pioneer of the international modernist style in Australia. The house was designed - in what was then bushland around Bacchus Marsh – for mathematician John Baker. The strong geometric floor plan of ‘naughts and crosses’ used sandstone from local quarries and took into account the remote location – the house was not connected to the main water line – by incorporating rain water tanks into its design and a school room for the owners 5 home schooled children. Later this month, the Melbourne School of Design will again be hosting the Robin Boyd Studio in collaboration with the Robin Boyd Foundation.

Master Studio Exhibition: Parallel Fields and One:One

Date: Saturday 8 June - Friday 14 June
Time: 10.00 am - 5.30 pm
Venue: Soldier Sailor Space, 49 Argyle Street, Fitzroy

Parallel Fields and One:One, two Master of Architecture Design Studios, will present an assortment of student works at a special exhibition in Fitzroy for one week only.

Inspired by chefs such as Ferran Adria, Heston Bloomenthal and Rene Redzepi, Parallel Fields takes strong references from culinary and gastronomy arts for their multi-sensorial qualities, often haptic experiences, and most of all, their novel approaches to their medium.

Preoccupied with how architecture can trigger the senses, One:One is founded on a mindful and tactile engagement with space. This idea relates directly to current architectural discourse on the ephemeral and perception, drawing on architects and artists from Alvar Aalto to Ernesto Neto, Etienne Boullee to James Turrell, re-calibrating boundaries in pursuit of a more meaningful experience in Architecture.

Alannah MacTiernan Talks Public Transport

Date: Friday 14 June
Time: 1.00 - 2.00 pm
Venue: Harold White Theatre, 757 Swanston Street
Topic: How public transport expansion gained bipartisan support in Perth: the lessons from Melbourne.

Alannah MacTiernan was the ALP Minister for Planning & Infrastructure in Western Australia from 2001 to 2008. During that time, she established the WA Public Transport Authority which transformed planning and management of public transport in Perth. Her period in office saw the construction of the 72 km Mandurah line (including a tunnel under central Perth) and extensions of the northern suburbs railway.

The 2013 WA state election saw a bidding war between Labor and Liberals on plans for further expansion of the Perth public transport network.

As the Victorian Liberals propose more inner-city roads and mothball plans for extensions of our rail system, what are the lessons from Perth in building bipartisan political support for rail expansion?
