Henry Darger at Intuit

Jan 20 – May 29, 2017

Examinations of Henry Darger’s writings juxtaposed with his artwork have been performed in scholarly essays but never presented in a museum or gallery setting where viewers can see an actual work of art next to a facsimile of a corresponding page of text. In fact, pages from his epic novel In the Realms of the Unreal are almost never exhibited except for the occasional display of a Realms volume from the permanent collection of the American Folk Art Museum, so the exhibition Henry Darger: Author/Artist is a rare opportunity to see Darger’s art and read his words in one and the same viewing.

Also opening at Intuit on January 20 until March 26, Unreal Realms takes the world Henry Darger imagined in In the Realms of the Unreal and provides a view into the otherworldly places created in the artworks of Adolf Wölfli, A. G. Rizzoli, Charles A. A. Dellschau, Ken Grimes and Darger.

FEATURED ARTIST:
Robert Tatin (1902–1983)

Le Musée Robert Tatin, Cossé-le-Vivien, Loire, France

Unlike most intuitive builders, Robert Tatin had experienced some success as a ceramic artist before he purchased the derelict rural farmhouse of La Frénouse. After imaginatively restoring the house with the assistance of his wife Lise, Tatin went on to build a personal temple to the heavens, reflecting his unique beliefs, a mixture of ancient and New Age philosophies.

A series of life-size sculptures representing Tatin’s own heroes stand along the “Avenue of the Giants” which leads to the open dragon’s mouth at the entrance to the walled compound.

Within, tall-standing sculptural structures representing the sun and moon look down on various figures, including those of Tatin and his wife, which are installed in arcades surrounding a central pool. Behind these are chambers that house Tatin’s paintings and other creations. Unlike a purely intuitive builder, Tatin had an overall scheme in mind and worked with some premeditation and planning.

Robert Tatin is featured in our Outsider Art Sourcebook.
