Academic Skills Workshop Program

Academic Skills has opened enrolments for September and October workshops. These workshops aim to assist students in developing skills essential to maximising their academic performance. Upcoming workshops include:

Essay Writing for Undergraduates  10 September
Learn about academic style, structure referencing and analysing the essay question. Understand the features of a clearly written argument.

Presenting Effectively  12 September
Effective presenters are well-organised, speak clearly and fluently, have great visuals and manage their nerves. Improve the quality of your presentations by learning how to develop these attributes. This workshop also provides opportunity for practice and feedback.

The Careers Access Through Diversity (CATD) forum is a free event, coordinated in 2013 by Careers & Employment at the University of Melbourne, which provides an opportunity for you to meet with key employers who actively support diversity in the workplace.

Diversity is about encouraging people to 'be themselves' and bring their full selves to the workplace because one's 'differences' enable an organisation to achieve its full potential.

This year the forum has been especially designed to focus on disability, indigenous and GLBTI students.

Come and meet employers who are committed to employing a diverse workforce. Find out about diversity and inclusion employment programs available to you and enhance your employment outcomes.

A special student price for this international symposium has been announced. Students will be able to attend the public lecture by Associate Professor Johannes Widodo and the two day symposium for only $30.

Drawing on the expertise of researchers, designers and advocates from across South East Asia and Australia this two day symposium wil examine recent trajectories in heritage practice, teaching and thinkiing in Asia. It will focus on the conservation of building as well as the wider context of urban and cultural heritage and will address the immefiate challenges confronting the field today.

The Festival of Ideas 2013, The Art of Science and Wellbeing, was launched on Monday 2 September. The programme for the weeklong event from 1 - 6 October is now available.

The Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning and Melbourne Sustainable Society Institute will host Environments Day on Wednesday 2 October. Environments Day brings together a host of local and international experts to discuss the issues impacting on our world.

The day kicks off with Imagine 2033, a discussion on a healthy, sustainable post-carbon world. This will be followed by The Liveable City, which will see designers and planners explore how we are approaching the major challenges posed by a drastic increase in urbanisation. Country, Place and Wellbeing considers how social and built environments impact on cultural identity in the 21st Century.

The day will conclude with an evening keynote address led by Kate Auty, The Victorian Commissioner for Environmental Sustainability. Ms Auty will unveil the findings from the Victorian Government's paper, The State of the Environment. This formal address will be followed by a panel discussion with Shelley Penn, Rob Gell, Maxine McKew and David Karoly.

Dean's Lecture Series: João Nunes

Register now for the third lecture in the 2013 Dean's Lecture Series by Portuguese Landscape Architect, João Nunes, entitled Time and Landscape.

João Nunes is founder and CEO of the Landscape Architecture Studio PROAP. As International Director, João is responsible for the strategic, executive and tactical leadership of the three international offices: Lisbon (Portugal), Luanda (Angola) and Treviso (Italy).

Over the past twenty years, the PROAP team have dedicated themselves to investigating ways to understand and communicate with landscape through national and international projects including Parque do Tejo and Trancão, Lisbon, Forlanini Park, Milan and Cordoaria Garden, a historic garden rehabilitation in Porto.
