My Isolation Diary
VEEP-VEEP. Move Over. Kamala Harris is Here. By Emily Vogel
Dear Diary, 2021 is like eating a pack of Sour Patch Kids… first they’re sour, then they’re sweet. Just a few weeks into the year, we’ve been dealt domestic terrorists storming the Capitol and a Sex and the City reboot without Samantha. But yesterday the sweet finally kicked-in as my taste buds danced to the powerful poetry of Amanda Gorman while Kamala Harris became the first female, Black and South Asian Vice President of the United States. Regardless of your political affiliation, there’s no doubt that Vice President Harris is paving the way for female leaders. As Hillary Clinton tweeted
Wednesday morning, “It delights me to think that what feels historical and amazing to us today – a woman sworn in to the vice presidency – will seem normal, obvious, “of course” to Kamala’s grand-nieces as they grow up. And they will be right.” In honor of this historical moment, we asked the women of Hollywood what Vice President Kamala Harris means to them. “The lightbulb of possibility went on for women all over the world,” said one of our WrapWomen participants. Amanda Gorman: Meet Joe Biden's
22-Year-Old Inauguration Poet
Born in LA in 1998, Amanda Gorman had a speech impediment as a child - an affliction she shares with America's new President. "It's made me the performer that I am and the storyteller that I strive to be," she said in a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times. Yesterday, Gorman became the youngest poet to perform at a presidential inaugural. Her poem, "The Hill We Climb," is a new composition she said she hoped would "speak to the moment" and "do this time justice." "I really wanted to use my words to be a point of unity and collaboration and togetherness," she told BBC before the ceremony. Gorman completed her poem on January 6, the day the Capitol in Washington DC was stormed by supporters of former President Donald Trump. Read full BBC article here.

On a day of firsts, the new administration honored Fire Captain Andrea Hall by tapping the Georgia firefighter to lead the Pledge of Allegiance during the inauguration of President Joe Biden. Hall began her career in 1993 as the first Black woman hired and assigned to a station at the City of Albany Fire Department, according to The 19th. In 2004 she was the first Black woman promoted to Fire Captain at Fulton County Fire
Rescue—a position she still holds after 16 years. At the inauguration on January 20, she recited the pledge out loud, while simultaneously leading it in American Sign Language. Read full Glamour article here.
Why Kamala Harris, Michelle Obama
and Hillary Clinton All Wore Purple
to the Inauguration
Vice President Kamala Harris, former First Lady Michelle Obama, and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton have long sent symbolic messages through their wardrobes. Today, however, on the day of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris's inauguration, the three powerful women made a sartorial statement, together in purple. The choice for all three women to wear the shade—which is a literal mix of the political party colors, red and blue—may have indeed been intentional, considering the hue's meaning to evoke a sense of solidarity, bipartisanship, and unity, according to The
Hill. It is also worth noting that both Harris and Obama wore clothing by Black American designers. Read full Harpers Bazaar article here.
The Biden-Harris White House Plans to “Restore America as a Champion for Women and Girls”
According to the National Women’s Law Center, women accounted for 100% of job losses in December. That sounds impossible or like an exaggeration. But it’s true. So the Biden-Harris administration—aware that it has its work cut out—has decided to take some concrete action: On Tuesday, President Biden and Vice President Harris announced the formation of the White House Gender Policy Council, aiming for what the team is calling a government-wide focus on uplifting the rights of girls and women in the United States and around the world, restoring America as a champion for
women and girls.” The council will be cochaired by Jennifer Klein and Julissa Reynoso, two women with extensive experience fighting for gender equity. According to a press release that the incoming administration released, the council will “guide and coordinate government policy that impacts women and girls, across a wide range of issues such as economic security, health care, racial justice, gender-based violence, and foreign policy, working in cooperation with the other White House policy councils.” Read full Glamour article here.

President Joe Biden announced on Tuesday that he was nominating Pennsylvania Health Secretary Dr. Rachel Levine as his assistant secretary for health in the Department of Health and Human Services.
