New ACGME Requirements Say "Non-Physicians" Can Be Core FacultyOn July 1, the ACGME released Common Program Requirements that allow "non-physician" educators to be designated as core faculty. In the background and intent commentary it states, "If the program director determines that the contribution of a non-physician individual is significant to the education of the residents, the program director may designate the individual as a program faculty member or a program core faculty member." The new requirements go into effect July 2019. The Family Medicine Review Committee has the option to further specify family medicine faculty qualifications. American Board of Family Medicine Foundation Approves Grant for Preceptor Expansion InitiativeThe American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM) Foundation has awarded STFM a grant of $314,000 to fund two projects over 3 years to support educational collaboratives to improve administrative efficiencies for community preceptors. The funding will be used to pilot, evaluate, and disseminate innovative approaches to standardize the onboarding of medical students and to engage community preceptors. This project is part of an interprofessional, multi-disciplinary Preceptor Expansion Initiative to increase the pool of community-based preceptors and the quality of training at ambulatory sites. The Leading Change Institute offers interprofessional teams an experiential curriculum providing skills and resources to enable the transformation of a family medicine teaching practice. Faculty serve 2-year terms and are reimbursed up to $800 in travel expenses for the Conference on Practice Improvement. The group serves as a consultative body to the ACGME administration concerning coordinator, graduate medical education, learning environment, and accreditation matters.
