NEW AT SUBWAY After a successful launch in France, Subway Finland has now introduced its new California Chicken Guacamole sub, featuring sous-vide chicken marinated in a rich blend of ingredients such as muscovado brown sugar, black pepper, smoked paprika and garlic. The new 6-inch sub, sold for under €6, is available since 4th November in all Subway stores in Finland for a limited time. In France, Subway has launched Le Gourmet Steakhouse sub, a French-style version with two mini beef patties. 2. THE HUT'S VEGAN PIZZASPizza Hut Finland has recently launched a range of 6 vegan-friendly pizzas in honour of the 40-year anniversary of the signature Pan Pizza. The new pizza offerings use a vegan cheese from Violife with options such as a Vegeroni, a meat-free pepperoni pizza; a Spicy Hot featuring meat-free buffalo strips; and a Meatless Vegan Feast which includes a variety of meat-like toppings such as vegeroni, meat-free chorizo and meat-free buffalo strips from the Plant Deli business to business range. 3. BURGER KING SHOWS SUPPORTBurger King urges customers to support fast food outlets in these difficult times via an unexpected tweet. The burger chain names its competitors and stresses the importance of collecting meals during further lockdowns to protect jobs. The initial tweet sparked great conversations on social media and the message that everyone is in this together quickly spread. In true Burger King fashion, the announcement ended with “Getting a Whopper is always best, but ordering a Big Mac is also not such a bad thing.” 4. MCDONALD'S FAVOURITES RETURNThe popular McRib makes its annual return to McDonald’s this year and will now be available in all U.S. restaurants as opposed to select locations. While the McRib made its debut in 1982, it is one of the most anticipated limited time offers at the chain. Another returning classic to the McDonald’s menu in France is the McBaguette. First introduced in 2012, the McBaguette is a French twist on the classic burger and appeals to French tastes by using local products including Charolaise beef, Label Rouge flour, French Dijon mustard and French Emmental cheese. 5. HOT & COLD CHRISTMAS SANDWICHESThe run up to Christmas has some exciting lunch options this year with new menu items already on offer. Pret’s festive menu features their Christmas Lunch sandwich and a new Vegan Nut Roast sandwich. The classic festive bakes are back at Greggs while Urban Eat’s Christmas offerings include a Turkey, Bacon & Cranberry sandwich and Vegan Feast sandwich. 6. FROZEN FOOD AISLES KEEP GROWINGConsumers are keeping their freezers stocked up with comforting, familiar and quick meal options. Nomad Foods, owner of food brands such as Birds Eye, Findus and Goodfellas, has reported strong performance this year with total revenue increasing almost 7% in its third quarter of 2020. Poundland has announced plans to expand their frozen food offering in 500 stores over the next two years. Sales of frozen products like pizzas, ready meals and desserts are expected to grow coming up to Christmas and due to a shift in eating habits during the pandemic. 7. NESTLE EXPANDS IN MEAL DELIVERYNestlé USA has acquired Freshly, a prepared meal delivery service. Founded in 2015, Freshly delivers nutritious chef-cooked meals to customers across the U.S. and currently ships more than one million meals a week. The meal delivery sector has seen rapid growth in recent years, led by meal kit firms such as HelloFresh and Blue Apron, and takeaway groups like Delivery Hero and Just Eat. For Nestlé, the deal marks the latest in a series of acquisitions and disposals aimed at moving the world’s largest packaged food group into faster-growing areas of the market. 8. SBARRO FROM NEW YORK TO UKSbarro, a US-based New-York style pizza franchise that sells by the slice, has announced plans to enter the UK market with EG Group. The first of five trial locations have opened in Birmingham with more to open next year if all goes well. The partnership is grounded in offering freshly prepared, high quality food offerings in the convenience store segment. 9. C-STORES REFOCUS STRATEGYSupermarket giant, Sainsbury’s unveiled its plans to increase the rate of new convenience store openings over the next three years. The supermarket is refocusing its core food business by lowering food prices, increase the number of new products it launches, and grow online grocery sales. At the SPAR Retailers Show earlier this week, key messages were that convenience stores would need to work hard to demonstrate value and shake off the stigma of being expensive along with offering home delivery to meet consumer needs.
