Pinehurst School Newsletter

Opening Words from the Executive Principal...

Kia ora tatou, good afternoon, 你好, 안녕하세요

A short message from me today before I head outside to see if the Easter Bunny has any chocolate eggs for me. We are heading into Easter Weekend today, and to all those attending services, celebrating or otherwise marking Easter, my very best wishes to you at this important time of the year. To all those heading away for the long weekend, travel safely and enjoy what promises to be a sunny weekend. And to our whole community: enjoy spending time together as a family. I hope you have the chance to take a deep breath and relax.

Thank you to all those who attended our 30th Anniversary Garden Party and our Foundation Day celebrations: it was wonderful to have so many parents with us on our birthday, and I hope everyone enjoyed themselves. I watched both the Primary and the College concerts, and I was bowled over once again by the talent on display. We had music and dance from many cultures, and to be able to see Year 1 and 2 students singing and performing and playing at such a high level, then older Primary students dance and play with such sophistication and control, made me very proud. The College concert included two wonderful performances on the guzheng, as well as one of the best chamber performances I’ve ever heard at our school, and a wide range of dancing too. This included what I think were our first K-Pop (Blackpink, for those in the know) performance at a concert, and our first Bollywood dance. Thank you to all those students who entertained us.

These two events were the final ones to be organised by Judy Wallace, who has been a parent and a member of staff at our school for 25 years. It’s Judy’s last day today, so if you know her and have the chance to say goodbye, please do so. She’s a wonderful part of our family, and I know she will stay connected to us.

A few congratulations: to our Premier Golf Team of Jaewoo Son, Yeonsoo Son, Nicole Choi and Towa Usui, who became Auckland Champions on Monday, beating Macleans College, a week after becoming North Harbour Champions. This is another outstanding achievement from our top golfers, and we’re very proud of them. Congratulations too to Brianna Tirado, who won the Auckland Schools Senior Girls Javelin, and last weekend was named New Zealand Champion in the Under 20 category for the Javelin, coming in 3rd place in the New Zealand Senior competition, a superb result. I’d also like to highlight our swimmers, who took part in the North Harbour competition this week: Jasmine Lyles won the 50 metre 13 and under breaststroke title and our other swimmers acquitted themselves well. And in the Year 7 and 8 Auckland Championships, Osbert Gu and Arissa Liu both had amazing days. Arissa won Silver in both the Year 7 Girls 50 metre Freestyle and 50 metres Back and placed 7th in her other 3 events - 2 of these events were ‘Open’ events for both Year 7 & 8 swimmers. Osbert had 3 podium finishes in his 5 events, with Gold in the Year 8 Boys 50 metres Backstroke, Silver in the 50 metres Open Butterfly stroke, and Bronze in the 50 metre Breaststroke.

I’d like to mention, as well, our team of 20 students who spent the whole weekend at the United Nations Youth Conference, doing a great job and learning about international diplomacy at the same time. My experience of attending these events is that our young people are much better at solving international disputes than their adult counterparts! That group of students, by the way, included some of our top golfers and swimmers, as well as many outstanding academics: we always encourage our students to take part in absolutely everything they can, and it is always great to see such enthusiasm.

Finally, my apologies that we had to cancel the Year 8 Leadership tramp, and the Year 2 Wheels Day. Both will be rescheduled, of course.

Ka kite anō au i a koutou. Have a good weekend, and Happy Easter!

Executive Principal

Kia Ora,

With the events to celebrate our 30th Anniversary taking place on Monday, I took the opportunity to reflect on the 10 years that I have been at Pinehurst. During my time at the school I have witnessed the college grow significantly in infrastructure, student, and staff numbers. I have also witnessed significant progress in our academic, sports, music, and cultural performances. There are many other aspects of the college that have grown and improved.

In many ways the school has changed to become a more mature and higher performing environment. Alongside much of this change though, has been a consistency that is so important for any institution or organisation to flourish. We have had great continuity in staffing, and also in the ethos and values of the school. The college has always been a place where students are able to reach their individual potential in a safe and inclusive environment, where they can grow and flourish. I have always been proud of the fact that we are a welcoming community where every student is able to find their niche and their friendship group.

A key pillar of the school is respect for others. This enables us to create the environment that we need for our students. At today’s college assembly I will be speaking about kindness. I think it is an important time to remind our students of how important kindness is, as we near the end of the term and students are potentially a bit tired. It is also important for bystanders to step into help sometimes. Bystanders play a big part in either facilitating, or halting negative behaviour. If you have any concerns about your child’s happiness at school, please do not hesitate to contact their homeroom teacher, POD teacher, Dean, or myself.

Unfortunately, the weather has wreaked a bit of havoc on our plans this week. All of the events that have been impacted will be rescheduled so that our students do not miss out on these valuable opportunities.

A reminder that parents are now able to book conferences with teachers for the 12th and 13th April. You will have a link through SchoolBox if you have not yet booked. If you have any questions about conferences, please do not hesitate to contact myself or Debbie Parker. Finally, on Wednesday parents will receive a Term One progress report.

I hope that all in our community have a fantastic Easter weekend.

Nga Mihi,

Kieran Verryt, Principal of College

Golf Team Win!

Our Premier Golf Team won the Auckland Secondary School Golf Championships on Monday. This is a tremendous achievement as their opponents Mcleans College are former national champions and their current team fields some of NZ's best players. On paper we were not expected to win. Despite this, Pinehurst won the match by 2 strokes and the title for 2021. All our players deserve a special mention because their team attitude and their motivation to win for the team and for Pinehurst was the difference in the end.
The top group of Nicole, Yeonsoo and the top 2 Mcleans students played a round of golf that would make professional players happy. Nicole finished the round 6 under par and Yeonsoo 5 under par. This was too much for the Mcleans players who finished 3 under and 1 under respectively. It should be noted that Yeonsoo and Nicole had no bogeys during the entire 18 holes.
Jaewoo and Towa played in the second group. Both players were extremely calm and focussed (on the outside anyway) with Jaewoo teeing off consistently throughout and Towa sinking some putts that were missable to say the least. He did say that he had practised some putting the night before - which the team obviously appreciates now.
This is the second time that Pinehurst has won the trophy and the joy of winning this competition in no way diminishes. The top team will now compete in one more tournament to secure the position at the Secondary School National Championships in Term 3.

Year 7-8 Auckland Swimming Champs

After qualifying at the Swimming Zone Day last week in 5 events each for the Auckland Championship / Interzone Swimming this week, Osbert (Year 8) and Arissa (Year 7) both had exceptional results. After the morning heats, they both qualified for finals for all their events in the afternoon.

Arissa won Silver in both the Year 7 Girls 50m Freestyle and 50m Backstroke and placed 7th in her other 3 events - 2 of these events were ‘Open’ events for both Year 7 & 8 swimmers, so this was a fantastic result for Arissa as a Year 7.

Osbert had 3 podium finishes in his 5 events, with Gold in the Year 8 Boys 50m Backstroke, Silver in the 50m Open Butterfly, Bronze in the 50m Breaststroke, and he was also 4th in 100m Freestyle and 5th in 50m Freestyle. We are very proud of these 2 outstanding young swimmers, as to qualify in one event / make one final at this level is difficult - to have the results above, swimming in heats as well as finals across 5 events, is simply outstanding! Congratulations Osbert and Arissa!

North Harbour Secondary Schools Swimming Zone Day

Yesterday a group of Pinehurst students competed in the NHSS Swimming Zone Day. Students were selected from our Inter House Swimming event held earlier this term. They also had to meet entry qualifying times to attend. While our students put in their best efforts, with some achieving their personal bests, the competition from other schools proved very strong.

Congratulations to Jasmine Lyles who placed 1st in the 13 & Under 50m Breaststroke.

Year 9 Camp

During this trip, I gained lots of knowledge that I had never encountered before and realised the importance of friendship. Most importantly, I tested my limits. On the first day, we had our first surprise! The bus didn’t take us all the way to the camp. It dropped us off, what felt like miles away, and we had to hike the rest of the way carrying only our day bag!

This is the first time I have ever walked so far, but I still tried my best to follow the teacher and not fall behind. About three hundred meters from the camp, there was a beach with no one there. The scenery was more beautiful than anything I have ever seen before.

The next day, we climbed a mountain which had 964 steps and found the beach when we got to the top. This was another first-time experience for me.

Similarly, on the second night, I went to the beach with a group of teachers and students and slept overnight on the sand dunes. That night I saw the most amazing, brightest stars I have ever seen.

When we boarded the boat on the third day, a lady said "what a beautiful age" when she knew that we were all students aged 12-14. This made me realise that I can become anyone or do anything I want to in the future. Therefore, I am determined to try everything now before I become an adult with too many responsibilities!

So, I had a go at sailing the boat and washed the dishes beneath the deck while the boat was still moving. Probably the most important lessons I learned from this camp was to always try new things and work as a team.

I am very grateful that I participated in this trip, and I’m glad that Mr. Johansen asked me to write about my camp experience.

Art Gallery Trip

On Tuesday the Year 11, 12 and 13 Art and Design students had the opportunity to visit the Toi Tu Toi exhibition at the Auckland Art Gallery.

This landmark exhibition celebrates a vast range of contemporary Māori art, including painting, sculpture, printmaking, clay-making, jewellery and body adornment, photography, digital media, film and installation art. Spanning 70 years with work by more than 100 artists, the exhibition presents contemporary Māori art as standing tall – toi tū – and healthy – toi ora – while reinforcing the wisdom and ideas that empower Māori and Indigenous ways of knowing. The exhibition is framed by the Māori creation narrative, making way for a new mode of experience.

Student Council

This year the Student Council decided to run lunch time board games every Wednesday and Friday. This was established with the aim to give students in the Senior College a place to meet and make new friends. Last week was the first one of these and it was a great success with many students ranging from Year 10 to Year 13 turning up and engaging in some friendly competition!

Holocaust Trunk & Display

The Holocaust foundation of New Zealand have kindly loaned the Senior College History Department and Library an actual 1940s suitcase with various Holocaust themed books and replicas of various items from this difficult period in human history. The A2 students do an entire unit of study on the Holocaust and how it came about. The students are busy with an analysis of the really great graphic novel 'Maus' by Art Spiegelman which presents the horrors of this period in an unusual way. The suitcase, books and replicas are on display in the library and it was accompanied by a really impressive file for suggested lessons.

Kia Ora,

We started this rather wet week with a big celebration of our school and the 30 years it has been open. From humble beginnings in a horse paddock with just three buildings, it has been amazing to watch Pinehurst continue to grow into the school it is today. Our celebrations started with an assembly where we managed to have all of our students in the Arena at once which was really lovely. Students and staff reflected on why Pinehurst is special to them and teachers told lots of funny stories of things that have happened in the past. There is a lot to be proud of and it was clear that our students feel very connected to their school.

As teachers, the special times centre around the relationships with their classes and families and the gains for children in learning along the way, whether large or small. Some of the students I used to teach have kept in touch and it is lovely to see them getting married, enjoying fantastic careers and having families of their own. To be a part of a child’s life and a positive contribution to it is a very special responsibility. The rest of our birthday celebration was very exciting with food trucks and families, a Primary concert and a movie afternoon; it was the perfect day.

I have been spending some time in Year 6 this week observing writing and maths lessons. All of our students were engaged in every lesson I saw for the whole lesson, the pace of the learning and explicit teaching they received meant that they really got a lot out of their time.  I often asked the question, ‘What is the most important thing you have learned in this lesson?’ Without fail each student I asked could tell me the focus of the lesson and what they had achieved. We have developed a specific way of teaching based on best practice and research based evidence which means that our students are able to progress and achieve at higher levels whilst still allowing for different teaching styles and of course enjoyment and interest which leads to a life long love of learning.

It was great to see so many parents at interviews this week, we really do encourage you to bring your child along so that they can celebrate their learning with you and work on their next steps. If you have any questions or need some more time with your child’s teacher, please don’t hesitate to make a time.

We hope that you can take a break as a family over Easter and we will see you again on Wednesday next week.

Ngā mihi,

Sian Coxon, Principal of Primary

P5 Easter Egg Hunt

Last Sunday the P5 Social Co-ordinator – Carmen Sutton held their first event for P5. To celebrate Easter the class enjoyed a great Sunday afternoon taking part in an Easter Egg hunt on the back fields at Pinehurst. Carmen, along with a few parents spent 30 minutes hiding 200 Easter eggs around the playground!

20 children took part in the Easter Egg Hunt which gave them the opportunity to find 10 eggs each – and all 200 eggs were accounted for! After a lot of running around and a full bag of eggs, they then took part in a few activities that gave them even more eggs to take home. Everyone had a great time and it was so nice to see a class come together for a fun event in the weekend!

Year 4 Camp

Eagerly we arrived at school with our suitcases ready for an adventure! Once our bags were loaded on to the bus, we found our seats and waved goodbye to our family as we drove off. Some of us had butterflies in our tummies because we were not sure of what to expect. The beautiful scenery greeted us upon arrival and soon we were filled with excitement. The days at camp were full of fun and challenging experiences such as archery, air rifles, rock climbing and paintball. We learnt new skills and worked in collaboration with our teammates, developing new friendships along the way. For many of us it was our first time staying the night away from our families, we are so proud of ourselves for everything we have accomplished at camp. Our camp adventure is definitely a highlight which we will remember for a long time to come. The Year 4 students and teachers would like to thank all the parent helpers who came along to assist us. We couldn't have had such a successful camp without you all!

"Peter Snell Camp is very beautiful and there are many activities to do. Surprisingly there were two trampolines, although it was dreadful when I couldn’t do the rock wall because of my broken finger. Everyone did it except my friend who was scared but… she found her COURAGE and was brave and she did it!"

- Joules Blackwell

"Camp was absolutely mind blowing! At first when I shouted goodbye to my parents my eyes were bursting with sadness!! But then at camp I realised it wasn’t so terrifying. I met a generous and joyful man called Gordon who was the man in charge of Peter Snell."

- Andrew Quin

Chinese Characters

In Year 5 and 6 we have been learning about Chinese characters. Some characters originated from the image of the objects and we made mini booklets showing the evolution of some of these Chinese characters. We have also learned how to introduce ourselves by saying what our name and age is.

P4 News

In P4 we have been talking about subtraction and addition. We are learning that subtraction is about taking away, and addition is about adding on. We really enjoy using our playdough for our subtraction smash. This help us visually see the amount we are taking away (and also lots of fun to squish playdough)! We are even learning how to add and subtract two-digit numbers!

In Maths we also learned some position and direction words. We talked about left and right and even learned a super silly song we like to move to. We linked our Maths with our computer technology by creating a coding mat and using positional language to retell the story of “Evil Pea.” We took turns giving Supertato directions to get to the end of the story.

Last week P4 and P5 held an assembly in our classroom. It was really wonderful to see the amazing work that P5, Senior Year 1 has completed. We shared some of the Koru patterns we created in Art class and loved seeing all the different and unique patterns. Ruby and Elsa got a certificate for always helping to clean up the classroom and for having super writing.

Another busy week in P12!

In Maths, we have started making connections using our prior knowledge of unit fractions and groups before introducing this week’s learning about non-unit fractions. The students used the white boards showing their understanding using diagrams and clearly showing their working out of how to solve a non-unit fraction problem. They talked about their learning to a friend and found that it reassured their understanding of how to solve non-unit fraction problems.

In Reading, we continue to read our novel the Twits by Roald Dahl. We are focusing on inferencing, where we use our schema, key words, and evidence from the text to answer questions. We discussed how clever this author is by engaging the audience/ reader using strong vocabulary, audience purpose and effective language features.

In Writing, we are learning to use our senses, powerful vocabulary, and similes to write a contrasting setting description. P12, you are very clever at listening to one another during pair share time where you were able to borrow interesting ideas, vocabulary and edit your writing to ensure you have written an engaging contrasting setting description.
