Men with localized prostate cancer may not have accurate perceptions of the risks of treatment, a new study suggests.

For example, about two-thirds of the 426 participants did not realize that the risk of cancer recurrence was similar for radical prostatectomy and radiotherapy. 

Greater awareness of treatment risks could help patients with decision-making, the researchers said. 

The findings were presented in London last March at the 32nd Annual Congress of the European Association of Urology.  More details, including other examples of the men's misperceptions, are available here.
