The third annual 3D Printing Showcase will be on Friday 9 and Saturday 10 October at Wilson Hall. This family-friendly, free event will bring together the latest technology, ideas, innovations and experts under one roof.

Day 1 will focus on research and education, while Day 2 will be an industry open day. Registration essential. Please share with friends, family, colleagues, students and other interested parties.

Fabrication Workshop Open Access for Students Every Weekday Afternoon

Do you want to use the Fabrication Workshop equipment? Do you want advice and assistance designing and building your models and projects?

If you do the Fabrication Workshop Machine Room and Studio Space is open every weekday afternoon between 1.00pm – 4.30pm for students to have hands-on access to use machines and hand tools. Experienced staff are also available during this time if you need advice and assistance with machinery or processes of making.

To gain access, complete the Fabrication Workshop Level 1 training online and complete the in person Level 2 training and inductions which run every Monday afternoon 1:00 – 2:30 and 3:00 – 4:30. You can sign up for the level 2 sessions by registering for a session at the front counter in the Fabrication Workshop.

Robotics workshop in February 2016

Scheduled for February 2016, this workshop will be a practical introduction to the growing field of architectural robotics. It will be open to students from both design and engineering related disciplines, as well interested students from other fields.

Student Leadership Opportunity: Construction student representation

Are you studying a Master of Construction Management? Would you like the opportunity to represent your fellow students and shape the future of your course?

The Postgraduate Construction Program Advisory Board needs two student representatives from the MCM.

The Graduate Student Association (GSA) is seeking expressions of interest from students in this course. After receiving applications, the GSA will recommend candidates to the board.

Please note the expected time commitment is a minimum of 3 hours per month for meetings and preparation, plus 1.5 hours for Student Representative Network (SRN) meetings and debriefing with the GSA Education and Policy Group.

#SharksDen Innovation Challenge

Prize: A prize to the value of $1000 to the winning team

Research Platforms will again be running the #SharksDen Innovation Challenge. This time the stakes are higher with the event running live at the 2015 3D Printing Showcase, and a prize to the value of $1000 awarded to the winning team.

Before the 3D printing showcase, you will be taught the tools to build, design and 3D print your greatest invention. You will also learn techniques on how to pitch your innovative product to a panel of investors. You and your team mates will need all these skills at the 3D Printing Showcase, as you will continue working on your designs live during the event. Teams will then pitch their idea to a panel of investors at the showcase.

CAADRIA 2016 call for papers

The 21st International Conference of the Association for Computer-Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia will be held at MSD from 30 March - 2 April 2016.

The topic is Living Systems and Micro-Utopias: Towards Continuous Designing.

Besides the specific theme, CAADRIA 2016 also invites posters on general topics in computational design research.

Young researchers currently involved in postgraduate studies are invited to submit their work-in-progress research papers to the Postgraduate Student Consortium.

Exhibition: Transmit Outward

Dates: 18 September - 6 October 2015
Venue: Dulux Gallery, MSD

Transmit|Outward, Inflection’s annual exhibition for 2015, explores the theme of projection and its relationship to the creative process as a perpetual state of becoming.

Transmit|Outward questions pre-existing notions of the architectural exhibition through a combination of crowd-sourced submissions, installations and events.

Featuring work from international and Australian architects, academics, artists and students, the exhibition showcases pieces that respond to the theme of projection. These works will be presented alongside collaborative events that investigate creative possibilities latent within the design process.

Global Architectural Profiling 'Casablanca' exhibition opening

Global Architectural Profiling (GAP) seeks to cultivate cross cultural ties between Melbourne and cities around the world by organising an annual public exhibition to showcase design and architecture from different urban centres across the globe.

The sixth annual GAP exhibition at the University of Melbourne in  features design and architecture from Casablanca, Kingdom of Morocco. 

The exhibition runs from 22 September - 2 October in the Andrew Lee King Fun Gallery, MSD building.

Call for submissions for RENDER design exhibition

Brunswick Street Gallery invites submissions for their 2015 design exhibition, RENDER, which will be held from 30 October to 12 November, 2015.

Initiated in 2014 as an annual occurrence, RENDER was a very successfully received and well attended exhibition. Work from emerging designers included print design, textile design, industrial design, furniture and jewellery design, 3D printing, homewares, typography, small object, packaging, apps and graphic design.

Intending to bridge a gap between the gallery environment and the design fair, the exhibition focusses on the importance of connecting client communities and emerging designers.

Australasian Student Competition: This Public Space

Entries due: Friday 25 September
Prize: Total prize value of $3000

This Public Space (TPS) calls on students to work in teams to develop innovative design and programming strategies that make public spaces more inclusive.

TPS asks participants to consider: why do we seek escape from the city, and what forms of escape can we find within the urban environment?

Submissions must come teams of up to four members, and should be multidisciplinary where possible; individuals may not participate alone.

Three shortlisted teams will be invited to present their work at a panel at This Public Life: Festival of Landscape Architecture in Melbourne in October 2015.

ABP Building Access

In order to access the Melbourne School of Design building and/or the Baldwin Spencer building outside of normal business hours, students must read and acknowledge the terms and conditions set out on the Building Induction web page (login required).

Upon successful completion of the Building Induction by eligible students, student access to ABP Buildings will be provided from 7am - 11pm, Monday to Sunday.  Please note that access make take up to two working days to be activated.

Building Access and your Student Card

  • You must have your student card on you when you are in any ABP Buildings (and anywhere on campus)
  • You will be required to present your student card to Security staff if asked to do so (if you refuse you will be asked to leave)

Tobacco-free campus

What will happen if I smoke on campus outside a designated smoking area?

You may be politely reminded of the University's policy and the location of the designated smoking area.
