The fringe: a silver lining

Europe faces complex social, environmental, political and economic challenges, which are visible in many European cities today. In order to address these challenges, EU2020 and the EU Urban Agenda set out ambitious goals. We are convinced that the urban-fringe areas can hold the keys to achieve these goals. Cities and their stakeholders aim to make urban-fringe areas more sustainable and viable, as an alternative to yesterday's car-based suburbia. Through new policies and plans, we are seeking ways to reduce urban fragmentation and make our cities more attractive, resilient and competitive.

Join us in Brussels on 13 June for a half-day conference, co-organized by the cities of Antwerp and Oslo, to find out more on how fringe-areas of city centres can help offer solutions to meet urban challenges.

The networks

The EUROCITIES project Edge-of-Centre Transformation and URBACT III network sub>urban. Reinventing the fringe have worked together with local stakeholders in 15 partner cities, sharing knowledge and building up expertise in urban development projects and local action plans in the fringe areas.

The networks' partner cities are Amsterdam, Antwerp, Baia Mare, Barcelona Metropolitan Area, Brno, Casoria, Düsseldorf, Gothenburg, Copenhagen, Nacka, Oslo, Solin, Stockholm and Vienna.

Sharing & Learning

During this conference we will illustrate the current situation in many of the urban fringe areas by providing examples of succesful, ongoing pilot projects, together with insights on how to roll out local action plans. Afterwards experts from URBACT, EUROCITIES and European institutions will engage in a debate with the audience. Participants will be invited to stay for a buffet lunch, to continue discussions with members of the networks, representatives of the partner cities and experts.
