Council spending boosts local economyCairns Regional Council injected $311 million directly into the Cairns economy last financial year through materials, services and employment. Council spent 88 per cent of its total $353 million expenditure on locally purchased goods and services, including materials and local contractors for the extensive capital works program. The economic flow-on from that local expenditure is estimated to be a further $378 million, bringing the total economic benefit from Council’s spending to $689 million for the financial year. Council spending accounts for 3.8 per cent of Cairns’ Gross Regional Product. Council signs Cities Power Partnership and takes actionCouncil is committed to continuing its great work in saving energy and reducing emissions and recently signed the Climate Council’s Cities Power Partnership. Council has continued to build on the investment of one megawatt of solar panels (equivalent to powering 276 households and saving Council $350,000 per annum); installed the most northerly charging station on the Electric Vehicle superhighway in collaboration with Economic Development Queensland (EDQ) and Energy Queensland; extended the roll out of LED upgrades for Council’s streetlight network; and continues to cultivate sustainability through vibrant events, education, seed funding for renewables and a growing cycling network.
