All commencing Melbourne School of Design students are strongly recommended to attend this one-day orientation program.

The MSD Pre-Semester Program is designed to provide new MSD students with an opportunity to transition smoothly into graduate student life.

Informative seminars and activities will equip you with knowledge of services, resources and skills required for study in MSD. The program connects you with other commencing students in your course and introduces you to key University staff, student clubs and your MSD building.

This free program includes lunch and concludes with refreshments.

The Pre-Semester Program follows Course Information Day, which will be held on Tuesday 24 February. For more information and to register for Course Information Day, visit the Orientation website.

Register now for the Peer Mentoring Program

The MSD Peer Mentoring Program is an opportunity for new students to get in touch with later-year MSD students, ask questions and share your experiences of navigating through the first few weeks of the start of your degree.

The program includes a welcome lunch in where you will meet later-year students as well as your fellow cohort. You will be put in touch with a designated peer mentor who will be a contact on campus for you over the coming weeks.

MSD students commencing their studies in Semester 1, 2015, are invited to register via the link below (student or staff log in required).

2015 Graduate Ambassador Program

The MSD is looking for friendly and enthusiastic master's students willing to share their experiences of studying at Melbourne through the MSD Graduate Ambassador Program. Ambassadors will participate in a range of activities to help promote the disciplines of the built environment by giving a first-hand student’s perspective of the MSD to stakeholders such as future students, alumni and industry partners.

International Summer Program in Architecture: Cities in Asia

Dates: 23 June - 16 July, 2015
Cost: USD $2,360 (or $2,130 for enrolment on or before 13 March)

This accredited HKU course focuses on the urgent architectural and urban issues confronting Asian cities today.

The International Summer Programme in Architecture this year strategically links the cities of Hong Kong, Seoul, and Singapore.

The program welcomes all undergraduate & graduate students, and recent graduates in the disciplines of architecture, landscape, urban design & urban studies, especially those who are keen to learn about the rapid urban development of Asian cities.

New subject: ABPL90368 Architecture and Media

ABPL90368 Architecture and Media critically examines the contemporary and historical modes in which architecture engages with media.

Some forms of media tools at the architect’s disposal to be studied include: the magazine, the journal article, the exhibition, the manifesto, the website, the competition, the photograph, the film, and the employment of social media.

This subject is for students interested in acquiring insight into the use of media for professional practice as well as for students who want to participate in the cultural industries and institutions related to architectural discourse. Special emphasis will be on the preparation of the MSD student journal Inflection.

Student representative and SRN applications open now

Application deadline: Friday 6 March 2015

The SRN is a group of students that care about their education and want a say in the decision-making process. Students sit as voting student representatives on a University Committee and have a say in all the decisions made.

If you are interested in being a student rep on a University Committee and can commit to attending a committee meetings and an SRN meeting each month, please apply to join the SRN. Selection will be based on your application and a short interview to be held in week 2 of Semester 1.

ABP seeking student committee representative

The Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning is seeking a Melbourne School of Design student for the role of OHS Committee student representative for 2015. The role involves four meetings per year, beginning in March.

10th International Design Award: Furniture design competition

Competition prize value: € 2,000 and travel to Germany
Submission deadline: Sunday 1 March 2015

The 10th International Design Award is currently accepting submissions. Let your imagination run free, leave existing paths of thinking and create a future-oriented, innovative and unique furniture solution.

Three winners will each receive a cash prize of € 2,000, an International Design Award trophy and a trip to Germany with travel and accommodation expenses born by Hettich and REHAU.

Participation is open to students. Entries can be submitted by individuals or teams.

CINECITY 2015 Architecture Film Project: one-minute film competition

Submission due date: Monday 23 March 2015

CINECITY 2015 is seeking budding architects and film makers to produce a 1 minute film for this year’s event. This competition is an exciting opportunity for you to put your name before leaders of architecture and the built environments.

In the past, selected films by our judges were screened as a fringe event of the National Architecture Conference in Federation Square Melbourne (2013) and the State Theatre in Perth (2014). Subsequently the films were re-screened at a number of other film festivals in Australia, Lisbon and Chile.

Young Architects Competition: Rome Community Ring

Young Architects Competitions (YAC) is launching a competition to redesign one of the treasures of Rome: Forte Portuense.

How can former military architecture be transformed into a leisure time and cultural focal point? The aim for this competition is to look for ideas worth triggering urban redevelopment, social cooperation and tourism.

University Annual Appeal’s 2015 Telethons – paid positions available

The University of Melbourne Advancement Office is looking for twenty-four hardworking and enthusiastic students to join the University Annual Appeal’s 2015 Telethons in the role of Student Callers.

The job requires a team of callers to phone alumni of the University to find out their latest news, inform them of alumni benefits and the University’s current news, and to ask if they wish to make a gift to the University. Calling takes place from 5.15 to 8.45pm Monday – Thursday and 9.45am to 5pm on Saturdays. No particular experience is required - we are just looking for current students who love talking to people and are keen to face challenges head-on!

The Melbourne Careers Centre, formerly Careers & Employment, is transitioning to a new service model and you're likely to see some changes.

While you won't see appointments available in the Student Advising System at present, you can still come and talk to a careers consultant about your career queries, or to get feedback on job applications, at the Careers Drop In Service.
