Our Lady of Grace Newsletter No Images? Click here Dear Lord, thank you so much for another day of life on Earth. Thank you for another beautiful sunrise to enjoy. Thank you for the wonderful sounds of nature, from the cool breeze brushing through the trees to the birds singing melodies. You are a wonderful God, full of grace and mercy. I praise you for allowing me another day to spend with my family. I love you Father! Amen. TERM 3 WEEK 9 SEPTEMBER 18, 2019 PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGEDear Parents and care givers How precious is the family as the privileged place for transmitting the faith! Grandparents Day is also being celebrated. How important grandparents are for family life, for passing on the human and religious heritage which is so essential for each and every society! How important it is to have intergenerational exchanges and dialogues, especially within the context of the family. Pope Francis 2015 We had over 500 Grandparents share the morning with us, we ran a competition and discovered some fun facts; the oldest grandparent was 91and 6 months, the youngest was 52, two grandparents had travelled the furthest from Victoria and one lucky grandparent had 16 grandchildren! I am grateful to the teachers for their classroom support and the generous parents for providing food for the morning tea. Our Parents and Friends association spent a significant time preparing the Siedliska Centre to be our morning tea venue and presenting the morning tea. As always I am thankful for their energy and commitment to our school. Fittingly the Grandparents left our school with a homework task - to keep praying for our students, staff and families at Our Lady of Grace. I am sure they will be diligent students. This Saturday morning one of our senior Netball teams will be playing in a grand-final. Congratulations to the team members; Indiana Cartwright-Fahy, Sarah Halleen, Tilly Saligari, Zoe Brown, Abbey Thomson, Chloe Brennan, Olivia Paccanaro, Taya Hughes and Amelie Russell for their skill, determination and sportsmanship in getting to this grand-final. The team has been ably supported, managed and coached by parent volunteers and I thank them for their efforts in this terrific outcome. Good luck to all. We have continued our Tournament of the Minds success with two of our teams moving through to the National competition in Hobart. Congratulations to all 4 teams who competed last Sunday and their wonderful families and teachers who were out in support of them. The two Tournament of the Minds teams in the Nationals will represent our school, we will need to fundraise for them to be able to attend the Hobart competition. Details of a Book Fair, Go Fund Me page and other fundraising opportunities will be provided soon. Thank you in anticipation of your support. Thank you to the 50 parents who attended the two workshops with our cybersafety expert Mr Paul Litherland. Paul provided a broad scope of the possibilities and challenges of our children being a part of the virtual world. We will continue to provide opportunities for our staff, parents and students to learn more about being good digital citizens. The government provides a terrific website for parents with many helpful ideas and information at https://www.esafety.gov.au. Parents need to be aware that many of the social media apps used by our children (facebook, messenger, Instagram …) require the user to be 13 years of age. If you give permission for them to use these apps and they are under 13 years of age, the developers are not legally responsible on the impact of your child, through cyberbullying, grooming etc – definitely food for thought. Father Greg Donovan met with the parents of our Confirmandees who will be making their Confirmation in October. Father Greg is a wonderful presenter who always leaves us with a gem of a quote. In talking out the Gifts of the Holy Spirit he talked about the Gifts having no conditions. "Grace is God's abundant free gift, it has no strings attached." We continue our preparation for this important Sacrament with a Retreat this Friday led by our Year 6 Teachers, Mrs Wandek, Sister Maureen and Sister Anita. Next week Tuesday and Thursday 5pm and 6.30 we will share a moving workshop with parents and children that deeply explores the Gifts of the Holy Spirit. Please pray for all those making their Confirmation and their families who are teaching them on this journey. God bless Gabrielle Doyle
FAQS Why the 6 Gen iPad as the chosen device? This was a terrific question and one that the ICT Strategy Team spent some time exploring. We started with the teaching and learning, the device selection was the final decision. Significant discussion, research and exploration of other school implementation processes was undertaken. We used external expertise and learnt from other schools and education systems, nationally and internationally. A laptop was deemed unsuitable as it provides a word processing and website building capacity, is less flexible and far more expensive than iPads. This laptop capacity can be provided by our class sets of laptops available to all students. The iPad was deemed to provide more collaborative opportunities. The SAMR (substitution, augmentation, modification and redefinition) model was used as the model for the decision that iPads were, for primary students, the most reliable in service and quality as well as range of apps and accessories – cameras, voice record etc appropriate for our age students. The Zuludesk student management system for iPads provides a high level management and security system. We are looking to continue to adapt our teaching and learning so that the technology in the classroom moves away from S, substituting worksheets or texts, to R, redefining the capacity of students to create and generate their learning. Obviously this is age appropriate to students and will take us some time to unlearn and learn the pedagogy associated with the device in the classroom.
